Here in Edinburgh, last night was incredibly cold for this time of the year with the temperature dropping down to just 3.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

We didn't get even a single ground frost during the entire month of May and even during last winter and the following spring, any kind of frost was always very hard to come by.

Yet in spite of all of that, a ground frost was recorded here during last night in what is supposed to be our "summer" which is just absolutely ridiculous!!🤢😡

In addition to that, last night was also our coldest night so far of that ongoing complete non-event which is our so-called "summer".

Having said that though, this is the time of year for observing noctilucent clouds and I'm surprised that I haven't even seen any mention of that on this forum so far during this year but when I looked out in the early hours of this morning at around 1am,there were some very impressive noctilucent clouds to my north where due to twilight lasting all night at this time of year, the sky was still very bright despite it being as dark as it gets all night at this time of year (that makes it all the more remarkable that it was still such a cold night anyway in spite of that).
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

No need for aircon last night - it was a pleasant 19 when I went to bed, and the temperature gradually fell to 18 over the night.

I generally need aircon when it gets into the 20s outside (which is most days this time of year!) as my upstairs is a shed, essentially, plonked on top of a bungalow in the 70s. It's unpleasant trying to sleep when it's 25+ indoors, of course, hence a/c to cool things down. It used to be much cooler in there in the 80s summers, with only the odd day getting above 25. Now it's unusual for it not to get that warm.

I rarely see the wolves these days, maybe once a month, but it's split as to whether it's warmer there than here. If we get a sea breeze it's cooler here, but in the common SW'ly setup it'll be warmer at home - the north Kent coastal area benefits, if you like, from a foehn effect as SW'lies cross the Downs. It's why Faversham (6 miles away to the south) held the UK record for a while.

No hamming needed for the averages btw, just pointing out that average means just that - you would expect temperatures to be below half the time, roughly.... and in the past 10, 15 years that seldom happens - even in winter! As I've said, people generally think we're in the Med (even those in the school where I worked), and get disappointed if it's not 5C or more above average every day. That's as unrealistic as hoping for a 1987 redux in winter, but people don't see it that way.

A run of a few days that are 3 or 4C below average in June is indeed noteworthy these days. It's sad that it's come to that, really, as a run of days 3 or 4 above (as we had repeatedly in May) doesn't even make people bat an eyelid - it's expected!

PS - you have my sympathies for working in central London. It can be unbearable there in summer, especially on the Tube, and as it happens... I'll be there for a few days at the end of the month, using up my hotel points in lieu of a Japan trip. I'm hoping the cooler conditions return then, but knowing my luck it'll be 30+!

Edit: given your hatred of warm and humid weather you might want to consider binning off Japan for Jersey. You will hate their weather this time of year

And as for Japan, I only booked for June as my companion voucher was expiring, so it was a case of "use it or lose it". Having had to cancel the trip last week, I've ended up losing it, of course, but hey-ho... life goes on. My preferred destination this time of year would be somewhere far up north - Barrow is good this time of year, and I don't mean the Barrow in England! 😉

One of the problems is perception. Often the forecasters say it has been warmer than average when they are talking about mean daily temperatures not mean maxima. This is most often the case in Spring and early Summer when there has been lots of cloud around especially at night as has been the case this year. Often sunless here depressing the daily maxima and cloudy at night prevrnting any cold nights and producing average or above daily temperatures. The public on the whole don't understand this. They just know day time has been cloudy and cool.

For the Scottish contingent I hadn't realised just how bad the weather could be in Shetland in mid-summer. I had looked into it before leaving and had expected some days of about 14C and some sunshine given the length of the day and virtually no darkness. It turned out that in the last 7 days it rained every day, although mostly showers and there were some short brighter spells. The thing I struggled with was the constant 30 mph wind, gusting to much more and day maxima mostly around 9C. Even with 5 layers it got you down a bit when out and about.
Still, I did see some nice birds and not a complete washout - the type of weather where a car and the rainfall radar is a great help! The roads were excellent as was phone reception around the mainland and even outer islands like Fetlar. Plus the sun broke through enough times to give some beautiful views of the bays when you could pretend briefly that you were in the Caribbean - till you got out of the car!

Based on the current models I would be surprised here in London if we hit 25 degrees this month. Today it got to 17 degrees. Next week according to The Met Office up to Thursday 20 degrees will be the maximum temperature achieved. Will this summer turn out to be the coolest for many years with 30 degrees not achieved for the first time in years?

CRAZY!

It was between 9 - 12c yesterday (Thurs) and Friday was between 12 - 14c with heavy rain and like last night I had to turn heating on down to 8c tonight and it's the middle of June. Oh well! I guess if we wait until September when Autumn starts and the new school term begins and summer holidays are over we will get +30.0c!?
