Looks like some isolated lightning strikes near the south coast, a line of heavy showers slowly inching this way.

MetO warning out for thunderstorms tomorrow (Wed 31st) for the SE, from Dorset to Essex, and again for Thu for all of England and Wales except the far W & SW. (Memo; open an August convection thread)


Predictions on rainfall radar shows the storms to be well scattered , so a rather messy thundery breakdown of the hot spell.

I would guess it will stay dry here IMO based on previous forecasts of thundery outbreaks. Love to be wrong though.
The local media are currently full of hyperbolic talk about thunderstorms and flooding, as they are always in these situations.
One day it will happen again here of course but perhaps not this time.

Interesting terminology in the SE text forecast from the Met Office - I can't say I've noticed them using the word "significant" in terms of thunderstorms before...

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Some significant thunderstorms and heavy showers remain possible through Thursday and into early Friday. Becoming fresher on Saturday with a spell of early rain clearing through.

for the SE tomorrow, from late morning onwards:

"Risk of severe thunderstorms. 100mm rain in 2-3 hours. Frequent lightning and large hail."

Hmm. I don't mind a good storm, but that sounds downright ominous! ⛈️🫤

If the likelihood and potential severity stays the same, I wouldn't be surprised to see an amber issued tomorrow morning...

Plenty of thunderstorms over France at present. They seem to be direct convective type and slow moving at the surface but with strong wind shear.
