The weather has been unusually cold and cloudy for mid-July and "high summer" with mean temperatures in central England running around 2C below the long term 30 year average. The coming week should see the weather turning somewhat warmer although temperatures will be relatively modest and the price we pay is that there could be more rain at times. The mediocre summer of 2024 continues...

Saturday morning has been wet across much of northern and northeastern England. We'e also had some heavy showers through parts of south west England but many other places have been dry, albeit with a lot of cloud.

This afternoon will see the rain ease for a time across northern and northeastern England but towards evening the wet weather will start to "pep up" again on the east coast. The rest of the country will stay dry with a lot of cloud and scattered heavy showers but also some brighter skies, mostly towards the west. It will be another very cool day for mid-July and cold under the persistent rain in the north east with temperatures ranging from 10C to 19C.

Overnight, rain becomes very heavy and persistent through northern and especially northeastern England with a risk of localized flooding in places. The rest of the country will stay dry with central and southern parts of England and Wales getting the best of any clear spells. It will be a chilly night with temperatures of 7C to 13C. Feeling cold for mid-July under the clear spells in the south and west.

Sunday starts very wet across northern and northeastern England with heavy and persistent outbreaks of rain. We should see the rain turning lighter and patchier as the day wears on but rain will be on and off all day in the north east. The rest of the country should have a mostly dry day, albeit with a lot of cloud though some sunny spells could develop in the south. Temperatures will be ranging from just 10C on the north east coast to 21C towards the south and western Scotland.

A trough of low pressure is moving in from the west on Monday.

The day should start mostly dry but heavy showers, thunderstorms and longer spells of thundery rain are likely to push northwards across England and Wales during the afternoon and evening. Meanwhile scattered heavy showers are possible for Scotland and Northern Ireland. A warmer and humid feel before the showers and storms get going with temperatures reaching 23C in the east for a time although temperatures will fall back as the rain develops later.

Tuesday will take the heavy showers northwards. Much of Scotland, northern and eastern England will be at risk of heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Meanwhile southern, western and south western regions will have a drier day with more sunshine. Quite warm in the south but cool in the north. Temperatures range from 13C to 24C.

The next area of low pressure arrives on Wednesday. Many places should start dry and bright on Wednesday morning but heavy rain in the west will push eastwards across the country through the day with brighter skies following along behind. The rain will be heavy in the north and west but lighter and patchier in the south and east. Temperatures will be quite warm ahead of the rain but cooler behind it. 14C to 25C from north west to south east.

A little ridge builds from the south west on Thursday perhaps bringing a drier day? Showers are still likely for Scotland and northern  England but further south and west many places should stay dry albeit probably with a lot of cloud again. Temperatures will be near normal at 15C to 23C.

Friday might be the best day of the week with most places having a dry, bright day with good sunny spells. Temperatures will very warm especially in the south with 17C to 26C possible. Watch out for cloud and rain into the far west and north of Scotland later.

Looking ahead to next weekend the weather may turning increasingly unsettled again as the next area of low pressure brings more wet weather from off the Atlantic. After a warm start to the weekend, temperatures probably become cooler again.

Summary: Very cool start with rain in the north. Temperatures becoming warmer but more rain at times, especially in the north and west.

It seems as though Autumn arrived early last year and has never really gone away.
