Minor geomagnetic activity....
https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/

"The auroras were not visible to the naked eye, but my camera was able to capture these faint red pillars from the south rim of the Grand Canyon," says photographer David Blanchard.
Faint auroras visible only to cameras is not what we expected from a potent Cannibal CME. But maybe this wasn't the Cannibal. A NOAA forecast model suggests an arrival time later on July 30th, so naked eye auroras might still be in the offing.

Not in Lincolnshire I think! But you never know....

Because the magnetic north pole is over northern Canada, the auroral ring is skewed much further south over America. Right now it's centred at 60N over Canada (roughly on a par with Helsinki), whereas in our part of the world it's at 75N.

https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/aurora-forecast-northern-hemisphere.jpg

Add 15 degrees to the Grand Canyon and you get 51N, which still sounds good - that's the south of the UK.

But then as we're further north, we get a much shorter and shallower night.

Here, at 52N, we currently get 3 hours of night with the sun, at its lowest, 20 degrees below the horizon.

The Grand Canyon gets 6 and a half hours of night, with the sun reaching 34 degrees below the horizon.

In other words - all things being equal, you'd prefer the Grand Canyon in terms of viewing opportunity... longer and deeper nights mean a better chance of seeing it.

If you decide to do a bit of Perseid meteor-spotting and the sky is dark enough - there's a RED ALERT for auroras. Long shot - but you never know...

Well - I did tell you....
STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A close encounter with a CME on Aug. 4th sparked a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. So far, auroras have been sighted as far south as latitude +39N in Colorado. If the storm persists (it might not), mid-latitude auroras may be visible in the USA and Europe during the night of Aug. 4-5.

"The sun has been mostly quiet for the past 24 hours. It could be the calm before the storm. There are currently two sunspots with 'delta-class' magnetic fields capable of unleashing X-class solar flares. Earth is in the strike zone if either AR3772 or AR3780 explodes today."

"The past 48 hours of high solar activity has propelled three CMEs toward Earth, including one launched by a strong X-class solar flare. Predicted impacts on Aug. 9/10th, 11th and 12th could spark days of minor (G1) to strong (G3) geomagnetic storms." Who knows. I doubt the nights in Lincs will be dark enough for seeing auroras. But the data could be interesting:

I taken some phone pictures at about 1:00 this morning and there were the usual hints of red there. Hopefully now, as the nights really start to drawn in there will be a few more of these geomagnetic storms. One with a similar intensity to May's event would be brilliant in November or December!

"Earth is experiencing G2-class geomagnetic storms on Aug. 12th as we move through the wake of a CME that struck over the weekend. If NOAA models are correct, two more CMEs could arrive before the day is over, extending the storm and possibly boosting it to category G3."

Amber alert for now... keep watching. ...ah - looks like returning to Red Alert 14.15hrs.
