Furthermore, the official overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was only down to 1.0°C and although this was enough to give us a ground frost, our wait for our first official air frost of the season goes on.

This should be a cooling time of the year and we have now entered the time of year in which this is no longer interesting for me or even worth reporting if we don't get that first air frost, especially given that last night's overnight minimum wasn't even low enough to give us our coldest night of the autumn so far and that is why I have deliberately refrained from reporting that up until now.

Today might well be another cold day but even that isn't exactly a dead cert as the temperature here in Edinburgh has now already jumped up to around 4°C here in Edinburgh in that early sunshine.

High cloud is now spilling in and starting to make the sunshine a bit more hazy but that is expected to herald much warmer weather on the way, probably from tonight onwards and this means that we might well have to wait for quite a bit longer now before we finally get that elusive first official air frost of the season.🤢

Disappointingly cloudy given the high pressure on the doorstep (and the MetO 'sunny' forecast) but a compensation as I drove home was a brilliant sundog with full rainbow colours

Today has now become our coldest day of this autumn so far with a maximum temperature of just 8.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

It has also been fairly bright for most of the time with some sunny intervals but with there being so much in the way of high cloud around, today's official sunshine total at Edinburgh Gogarbank was just an abysmal 0.7 hours of sunshine.

Currently around 6°C here in Edinburgh although the temperature isn't expected to drop by as much tonight as it did last night.

Complete fail of the forecast of a sunny day down here... don't get me wrong it was fine for working outside cutting hedges and trying to give our new resident badger a serious problem getting into our garden, but otherwise nondescript.

9.5c was the max after a low of 4.1c, the morning run was still in shorts and tshirt and felt pleasant with no wind at all.

After yesterday's overcast conditions and dampness with 3.4 mm, today was a better day by being drier and brighter thus gave me a chance to give my lawn & hedge what could/should be the last cut of 2024. Yes, it was a bit chilly with a max of 12.8 C at 12.40 pm but at least winds were light so it didn't feel THAT cold when I did the garden in cardie and shorts.

Well, I wasn't expecting this but our first official air frost of the season at Edinburgh Gogarbank has just been recorded as the temperature there dropped to a minimum of -0.9°C and unlike yesterday morning, there is even some visible frost on the roofs.

However, today has also started off on a bright and sunny note.

Currently around 0°C here in Edinburgh although it is forecast to warm up by quite a lot during today.

Rather interestingly, last night's overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was corrected downwards to -1.4°C by the 09z raw BUFR/SYNOP data this morning but it warmed up quite a lot during the day and today's maximum temperature at that very same station was 13.5°C thus giving us a very impressive diurnal temperature range for today of 14.9°C.

In addition to that, it was completely sunny all day with a very impressive (for the time of year) total of 9.0 hours of sunshine being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today our sunniest day of this month so far and given the still rapidly shortening days at the moment, that probably won't be beaten now for the rest of this year.

There has also been virtually no wind and that made the Firth of Forth in the distance look like a glass mirror during the day.

However, the temperatures are now dropping away under clear skies and as I write, the temperature here in Edinburgh is now down to around 8°C. Given that this is very close to yesterday's maximum temperature though, that shows just how milder today got during the day compared to yesterday when there was a lot more in the way of high cloud.
