City of Hamilton has declared a SNOW EMERGENCY. Meaning all cars and vehicles that are non-essential must be parked in a way to allow city clearing crews full access to local roads as well as highways. This also releases further resources from local and state government.

Hamilton Munro from 9am to 12noon reporting nion whiteout conditions, blowing snow and vertical visability of less than 200m. No a/c landing or departing.

At Pearson, over 50% of flights now cancelled for the day. GO Transit running a revised schedule with significant delays to bus services. Trains running to a revised timetable are coping remarkbly well!

All schools including Mohawk & McMaster University closed. Most if not all schools in Toronto have closed, certainly school transportaion is a no go.

Which just goes to show that Hamilton and Toronto are getting pasted for a change.

Normally you'd go to London for more snow, especially when the Lake Huron snow machine cranks up.

    Heavy snowfall of 25 to 30 cm and frequent blowing snow.

Heavy snow continues as a major winter storm currently centred over New York State affects the regions today. Total snowfall amounts of 25 to 30 centimetres are expected with snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour possible under the heaviest bands. Strong and gusty northeasterly winds are blowing the freshly fallen snow and resulting in near zero visibility at times.

The snow is forecast to taper off from west to east early this evening.

Hazardous winter travelling conditions from near zero visibility, areas of heavy snow and local blowing snow are expected. Rapidly accumulating snow will also contribute to dangerous driving conditions. Travel plans should be changed accordingly.

The storm centre will move away tonight and merge with another winter storm forecast to affect parts of New England and the Maritimes.

I think I'm going mad! Just checked the conditions/radar after watching BBC News who are warning of the worst blizzard for years in NYC, and there looks like some light/mod snow in the area which will clear during the morning as the low pulls away N and NE.

Is this a severe winter storm?

Maybe not in NYC. Eastern Long Island though has had 13" so far.

Connecticut is getting pasted too, Hamden reporting 26" as of 6AM our time, with more to come.

This storm looks like it's going to be a record breaker.

As I record Toronto data on my file for yesterday was -9.1C and -6.7C with 23.2mm of rain as they melt it but not yet updated on the snow levels but was 1cm of snow on the 7th Feb.  I guess it would be around a foot deep and that very deep for downtown Toronto alone.  My cousin sent me picture from her place outside Toronto and look like 1-2ft of snow on her street and her car buried completely from drifting.  That a lot more than 22nd Jan 2005 snow events which only gave out 15cm deep.

New York City wasn't expected to be the worse hit. Areas like Boston were in the main firing line. NYC was still expecting a foot of snow and that's been falling since yesterday and there's a good few hours left. It started off as wet snow which was much more impressive to watch but now the real cold air has dug in, they have the same small flake dry snow so it doesn't look quite as bad but it's still just as heavy (if that makes sense!)

One snow band dumped 12" in 90 minutes on Hartford, according to the updated forecast below on local Boston TV. Unbelievable.

Officially 34" of snow on the ground in Hamden, CT.

If I was a betting man I'd say Worcester MA will finish at or near the top of the storm totals, given the advantage of its elevation.

Updated storm totals for Ontario, giving Toronto around a foot of snow (26-34cm depending on location), with 35cm for Dundas. Around 45cm (18") for St Catherine's. Wish it happened here as I only saw few times very intense snowfall which come out as white echos on old Met radar, The thundersnow event and some past heavy intense snowfalls lasted for 5-10mins gave out 5cm or more.  On the Thames streamer event it reached it peak around 1.30am when white echo area passed over me, otherwise red to yellow echoes all night.
