Updated storm totals for Ontario, giving Toronto around a foot of snow (26-34cm depending on location), with 35cm for Dundas. Around 45cm (18") for St Catherine's. So this one really delivered - biggest storm in a number of years for T.O. http://weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/SWS_bulletins_e.html?prov=on

Updated from Toronto airport which I record as I don't find any temps, rainfall and snowfall record data for Ajax where my relatives lives which saw more than 1 ft deep but the airport only recorded measly 8cm which is quite very low when many areas around it are a ft deep.  Source from Environment Canada website which only record major places/airport regions but no records for local areas.

Hello all, we survived the storm of the winter, perhaps the storm of many winter's on Friday. For once, it truely delivered! As Graeme reported, St.Catharine's, Ont just down the QEW from Hamilton was the Ontario high spot for totals at 45cm. This way surpased what was predicted for that location and lake-enhancement as it done for here definately helped.

Some really noteable heavy snowfalls though also, 36cm for us here in Upper Dundas on the Mountain, 35cm in Dundas Town, 31cm in Downtown Hamilton, 33cm at Hamilton Munro, 30cm at Oakville. And then up the 401 into the heart of Toronto as Graeme reported, totals well over a foot widely between 26-34cm also depending on location. Pearson 26cm, Toronto Island Airport was 30cm and Toronto Buttonville (a smaller regional airport to the northend of the City) unofficially recorded 38cm.

I hope the pics done the event justice.  Everything basically shut down this end of the Lakeshore to cope with it and some local roads including our own only got plowed yesterday afternoon but overall feeling is that the City coped better with double the amount of snow falling than it done in December.

One noteable news story that is still ongoing from this was at Pearson airport, where customers waiting for their hire car or to collect their own long stay car are waiting upto 8hrs to get their vehicle. The airport on Saturday also struggled to get back upto speed mostly due to aircraft being out of position but also the amount of snow that fell trapped pushback tugs into snowbanks and preventing them from attending any aircraft that did want to go early on Saturday morning.

Across the border in the U.S. particulary up in CT and MA, a historic snowstorm. Blizzard conditions in Boston and the highest snowtotal i seen today was in Hamden, CT at 40". Amazing stuff.

Weather never stays still and around here it is no different. Tonight, another storm moves into Southern Ontario and as a warm front temps will be rising. Predominantly rain, possible Freezing rain for an extended period in the Ottawa Valley tonight. Snowmelt could cause some flooding concerns tomorrow before it turns colder and re-freezes tomorrow night. This sets up a week of some sun, cloud with the odd flurry and temps between -2c & +2c. By weeks end, another storm with more snow may spread into the area but at this stage too early to call amounts etc.

After the amazing storm of last weekend, it's been a quiter period this past week for weather in Southern Ontario. Milder too which has allowed a thaw of the substantial snowbanks piled up at the side of the road. It has turned colder though in the last couple of days as the pattern changes to more of a stormy one again. After a weekend of flurries forecast, it looks like we will have two storms come through the GTA this week.

One on Tuesday which is a borderline snowevent, could be rain down here and snow for Toronto but weaker. The storm forecast at the minute for next Friday is looking stronger. A long way off but could be better aligned for snowfall to a wider area. This storm also has the potential according to the SPC down the U.S. to bring long lived tracking Tornadoes to the deep south and SE on Thurs-Fri next week, one to watch.

Have a great weekend everyone

Hello folks, last week's two predicted storms failed to fire the imagination. Last Tuesday was an all rain event for most of the GTA and thus a non-event followed by colder air however Thursday into Friday's storm went south into the lower 48 and thus Hamilton just say some light accumulation from it.

The weekend was quieter and it had looked likely that the next storm was also going to be wet rather than white. However, changes are afoot and with just over 24hrs to go, EC and others are starting to fire the alarm bells for a winter wallop as February ends :

Another battle between winter and early spring setting up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
==discussion==

A low pressure system over Northeastern Texas is forecast to
intensify and move northeastward to pass near Southern Ontario
Tuesday night and Wednesday. Significant amounts of precipitation
Are likely with this system as it will be pulling moisture
Northward from the Gulf of Mexico.

Current indications suggest that precipitation will begin Tuesday
afternoon as rain over areas south of a line from Sarnia to St
Catharines. The precipitation will change over to wet snow by early
Tuesday evening and the snow will spread northeastward to South
Central Ontario by late Tuesday evening and to Eastern Ontario by
Wednesday morning. Some areas, especially to the west and northwest
of Lake Ontario and including the Greater Toronto area and
Regions to the west of the Niagara Escarpment including Waterloo
region, Guelph and Orangeville, could receive snowfall amounts as
high as 15 cm through Wednesday morning with this system.

However, there is still uncertainty as to whether or not the
precipitation will be all snow, or some combination of wet snow and
rain.  If precipitation falls as rain instead, or if the snow is too
wet and it melts when it contacts the ground, these snowfall totals
could be considerably less. Areas near the Lake Ontario shoreline
Are also likely to have lower amounts of snow due to mixing with
rain.

This Texas low does have the potential to cause significant impact
On transportation. It is quite possible the commutes to work and
Home on Wednesday will be slow with difficult winter driving
conditions as a result.

Environment Canada is closely monitoring this interesting
Situation. This statement will be updated to include additional
information as it becomes available regarding the evolution of this
potential winter storm.

Best forecast at the moment has it very touch and go for the City of Hamilton area to get much above 10cm from this. Probably my home location with added height and distance from the Lakeshore could ensure that Upper Dundas stays more snow than rain. Anywhere N & W of here including Toronto at the minute will see mostly snow from this system thru tomorrow night and into Wednesday's rush-hour.

Compared to the system earlier in the month, it's smaller and less laden with precip however a noteable snowevent for some in the GTA.

Keep you posted tomorrow on how this one looks. A last swipe of winter perhaps before maybe a shoot of spring just around the corner?

Quick update, still looking likely that most of the GTA will see a substantial snowstorm later this evening and overnight into wednesday. A good chance for some mixing with rain at first this evening, temps are currently +3c in both Hamilton & Toronto, but dewpoints will lower later and the mixing should change to all snow, especially with heavy precip, elevation and anywhere away from the immediate Lakeshore area.

EC, going for upto 20cm by noon tomorrow which would cause some major problems again. Brett Anderson on Accuweather going for a lower total of 8-15cm for the Lakeshore and GTA. North of Toronto into the 20cm zone.

I'm still not convinced myself that this one will deliver, very borderline in alot of ways but if it does it will be 3 major snowfalls in the winter months, which with February ending on Thursday is not bad going considering the lack of action around here for the past couple of winters.

Will update tomorrow morning.

Morning folks, this one as i had thought was a bit of doozy for most of the GTA including Hamilton. Too factors never sustainable for longivity of snowfall (air temp, ground temp) came into play. Add that the precip was only really heavy for a couple of hours and you have this below as the Spec reports this morning :

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/article/893505--snowfall-warnings-turn-to-rain-and-slush.

Snowfall widely reported N and W of Hamilton. Guelph looks to have +10cm, Markham (NE of T.O.) also over 10cm and Oshawa 8-10cm. Toronto Pearson reported 8cm as of 5am, here in Dundas you'd be lucky if it was 6cm to be honest, the airport reporting just 5cm. Most of the snow fell in a short concentrated spell around 8-9pm last evening and it was very bad when it came, but it didn't last. Slushy and rainy mixing for the most part, a complete messy mucky - well roll on summer feeling morning!

Some power outages with this heavy wet snow most notably in the Toronto suburbs and around the DWP (Don Valley Parkway) in Toronto.

Temps remain near 0c for the next few days and i'm looking forward increasingly after last night to Spring truely getting going.

On that note, interesting news out of EC earlier last week regarding their storm coverage for the upcoming summer. EC will adopt a similar set-up to that of the NWS in the states where accurate timing and intensity of storms are forecast. Here's an article of the changes :

Watches

City of Calgary
3:28 PM MST Friday 01 March 2013
Winter storm watch for
City of Calgary issued

Winter storm expected to develop late Saturday night.

The potential for severe winter weather exists over these regions.

A series of upper disturbances from the Pacific will continue to generate significant snowfall amounts in Jasper and Banff.

A stronger Pacific disturbance currently observed over the Gulf Of Alaska will move into Southern Alberta Saturday afternoon. As the energy associated with the impulse moves into Alberta, a low pressure system will develop bringing with it an area of snow over the Elbow region as well as the Mountain Parks. Over 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in these regions by Sunday afternoon.

The aforementioned low pressure system will intensify further as it moves southeast. Winds of 40 km/h with gusts to 60 km/h combined with heavy snow will cause reduced visibilities beginning late Saturday night and continuing through Sunday night. There is also a chance of freezing rain early Sunday morning. Up to 20 centimetres of snow is expected in parts of Southwestern Alberta before the storm system moves into Montana by Monday. The exact track of this storm system is still uncertain and as more information becomes available, regions within the watch area will likely be upgraded to winter storm warnings.

Strong west to southwest winds of 60 km/h with gusts to 100 km/h will continue this evening over the Crowsnest and Cardston regions.

Please use the Twitter hashtag #abstorm to report severe weather to Environment Canada.

I'll let you know if this one goes with a bang or a whimper.  Nothing else crazy exiting to report from my time away, winter has been fairly sedate the last month or so...

Peter
