A colleague of mine living at Chilwell Notts had on his weather station , a relative humidity reading of just 6% on Sunday. He thinks the reading is faulty but did  others have very low humidity readings over the weekend? And is therea UK record for lowest humidity?

As for record values - see the discussion here: http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/97854-lowest-relative-humidity-recorded-in-the-uk/

I think the 10% figure mentioned is likely the lowest reliable-ish value away from the Highlands, with perhaps the 8% at Altnaharra (revised from 1.6%) the overall winner.

I see that NI has now the claim to the hottest day of the year so far:

"It has recently been confirmed that the new highest temperature of the year so far has been recorded at Edenfel, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland on Monday 8 July, reaching 29.9C. "

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_weather.html

(I grew up in Tyrone and still have no idea where Edenfel is! I believe it may be a street or an area of Omagh rather than an actual separate population centre?)

New UK Maximum confirmed for 2013

It has recently been confirmed that the new highest temperature of the year so far has been recorded at Edenfel, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland on Monday 8 July, reaching 29.9C. Before this, 29.7 C at Bournemouth Hurn on Sunday 7 July was the previous UK maximum. Meanwhile, Scotland saw its highest temperature of the year so far during the afternoon of Tuesday 9 July, reaching 28.7 C at Strathallan Airfield. Edinburgh Gogerbank was nearly as hot with the temperature peaking at 28.5 C.

Edit - beaten to it!

Bet that record won't hold for long though.. Friday and Saturday look to threaten it.

Edenfel is also credited with the NI record low maximum on this page, in Dec 2010: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/extremes/

Edit - just noticed the record was set on Monday, not today! Annoying that we still didn't quite break 30C for the prediction game!

We may not be having a full-blown heatwave, but the plentiful sunshine and reasonably high temperatures are having a notable impact on the SSTs around the UK:

http://ghrsst-pp.metoffice.com/pages/latest_analysis/sst_monitor/ostia/test_0_600.png

Now largely 14-15°C across open water and 16-17°C for near-shore waters in the south and west.

There has also been substantial warming around NW Europe with SST anomalies rising from 1-2°C below average to about as far above average in many areas:

http://ghrsst-pp.metoffice.com/pages/latest_analysis/sst_monitor/ostia/sst_anom_0_600.png

...but the most impressive anomalies are near to the coasts of Wales and N. England. Over 3°C above the LTA in places still working on the Channel and far-southern reaches of the North Sea though. In theory those should warm to above average any day now...

Only 17.6 C here but the sun is back out again and the 71% humidity and the lighter wind are making it feel quite muggy anyway.

How could I be the most nearest to the continent and yet still hold onto temperatures that are more suited for April? Still, I'm not a heat lover so this suits me fine anyway.
