Overall:  A reasonable month overall.  It was largely dry (most of the rain fell over the weekend 22/23 June) and although there were no heatwaves, it was never particularly cold.  The month came in above average and indeed it ended a run of 15 months where maximum temps were below average - the previous month with above average maxima was March 2012!!!

It would have been very much on the dry side but for 21mm o the 23rd.
Very different to last year which had three or four days like that.
Another colder than averga month, no month this year has been above average.

The first summer month with above average sunshine since July 2009 and the first since July 2006 to be both drier and sunnier than average,

Well after 1 month of summer has passed at the blink of an eye how is the Summer shaping up meteorologically so far.

June was a dry month overall with just 28mm of rain through the month with no notable rainfall events which is a stark contrast to last Summer. The problem has been though we have never got to very good temperatures with an average temperature of 14.0C across the town for June which makes it the third coldest June for the area since the millennium. This might be of some surprise to some folks but the reasons synoptically has been there to see. Through the month winds have predominated from the North Atlantic feeding down over the UK around a large Azores High pressure. While it kept the weather quite dry winds originating from near Canada or Newfoundland for many days have kept temperatures on the low side at times. As always though there were some exceptions and a brief warm spell soon after mid month saw the highest temperature for the month of 25.3C in some warm and humid sunshine.This didn't last too long though before cooler air fed back down from the NW.

It was quite a breezy month too with winds quite blustery at times. The strongest gust was 33mph on the afternoon of the 13th. Winds at the surface for more than half of the month maintained a Westerly component to them while the rest of the time they were from an Easterly point.

Sunshine amounts were around average for the month over the area with 14 hrs and 42 minutes of sunshine on the 4th making that the sunniest day. The whole month amassed a total of 168hrs and 24mins of bright sunshine with only 1 day with no sun at all and that was on the 16th.

There was some thunder heard for half an hour or so from a distant storm to the South of the area at lunchtime on the 7th but no direct contact from the storm over Radstock was felt other than a burst of heavy rain. There was no unusual phenomenon over the area through the month with no frost or fog to note.

So in Summary a drier than average month with near average sunshine and somewhat below average temperatures overall.

We experienced the unusual combination of being rather dull but very dry with near average temperatures. It was a predominantly settled first 12 days with high pressure to the north ushering frequent and eventually cloudy and cool NE'ly winds. It turned briefly very humid and muggy with some thundery rain between the 18th-20th. The remainder of the month was characterised by westerly winds with occasional rain or showers but amounts were small due to relatively high pressure in continental Europe.
