Was woken by an impressive thunder and lightning display around 4am this morning. Very, very humid now.

Rudely awoken by an active storm at 5.50am, that lasted around half an hour. Thundery rain here for the last hour and a half. What's noteable about this thundery rain is that some of the discharges are 2 to 3 seconds long, followed by up to a minute of thunder!

This is all I could manage from the safety of a bathroom window (too wet and dangerous to go out and find a better location). But to give an idea of the intensity of the strike rate, those are three separate strikes while the camera was open for 15 seconds (and it was hand held with the camera resting on a window ledge).

This itch has been well and truly scratched. So, it seems that we CAN do storms like this after all.

Great pic, Ian! Worth waiting all those years for!!

Valid from/until: 07:50 - 03:00GMT on Tuesday 23rd July/Wednesday 24th July 2013, for the following regions of the United Kingdom & Eire:

Parts of (see map)

Much of central and northern England

E Anglia

Much of Scotland

THREATS

Hail to 3-4cms diameter; wind gusts to 60mph; cloud-ground lightning; isolated tornadoes

SYNOPSIS

Moisture plume characterised by high dewpoints/precipitable water values is across the watch area. Numerous showers and thunderstorms, associated with an upper trough, are ongoing across parts of the area, with frequent lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds, and isolated large hail possible. Through the morning, these should continue to drift generally northwards.

Some additional development is likely across northern parts of England and Scotland through today, with a continuing risk of hail/wind - storm organisation into lines is possible, with a low but non-zero risk of storm rotation. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out with any surface-based storms.

Some clearing in the wake of this activity may allow surface heating to develop across portions of the Midlands and into E Anglia later this morning and into this afternoon, allowing CAPEs to reach around 2000 J/Kg. With 0-6km shear of around 30 knots, well-organised multicells with large hail and damaging winds are possible. A tornado cannot be ruled out, especially where any cell-mergers allow favourable low-level vorticity to be ingested.

Some places have had cracking storms, others have missed out. I would put my area in the largely missed out category. Can't see anything else happening now.

Apparently I brought my shield with me to work. Just on the phone to my wife who is at a car garage between Finchampstead and Wokingham, and she said they have a storm in progress, and it is pouring with rain. Here in Hook, Hants, we just had one rumble of thunder a few minutes ago, presumably from the same storm which is developing rapidly as it heads north.

And I would class myself in the 'missed out' category. Very disappointing, but I expect it now.

Nothing here. Storms to my east and west overnight but we missed out.
Maybe time yet but I'm not in a good position here.

This only covers S UK so not representative of all of UK but a decent indication.
