MetO Chief forecaster:
"Although there remains some uncertainty concerning the extent of these heavy showers and thunderstorms, there is an increasing signal for a band of heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms to move north to affect central southern England, the Midlands and then northern England, whilst thunderstorms giving frequent lightning, torrential rain and squally winds are likely to affect parts of southeast England and East Anglia during Saturday afternoon and into the early hours of Sunday. Rainfall amounts will vary considerably, but there is again scope for 30 mm of rain to fall within an hour and 50 mm or more in less than 3 hours."

Sounds interesting for SE and EA.

There's been a fair amount of thundery activity here this week whixh doesn't happen often. This morning was the 3rd occurence of thunder here this week with the previous two being on Tuesday morning and then Thursday afternoon. The only day this year we had any thunder prior to this week to my recollection was way back on 27th January!

As we near the possible "event", chart probably showing its closest encounter so far with the highest values. Ian and Steve (in the best location), hope you are primed for tomorrow. Should see some activity myself hopefully.

Certainly is of some interest! Am rubbing the lens on my camera again, and hopefully will be more prepared for it with a more interesting location come the evening , , , assuming it'll keep going until then. If so then I may have to use my old but trusty Fuji S5600 rather than my D7000 what with the heavy rain. See how it goes.

Now off to hit the sack and see what tomorrow brings us. Mind you, it's now quite muggy as I've come over all hot and menopausal. I'm recording 18.9 C with 88% humidity but there isn't a breath of wind.

I first experienced thunder back in 1985 and in all the years since by my reckoning, the number of days in most years that thunder has occured in my area has more often than not failed to reach 10. In 2012 we had only 4 days that I can definitely recall with thunder at some point; those days were 22nd June, 4th July, 4th August and 29th August. We've now had 4 so far in 2013, 3 of them have been during this week. A lot of it has to do with synoptic set-upd and pressure patterns I think, and the set-up this week has been ripe for thundery activity in many places, even in Scotland.

Look at that huge MCS that's suddenly sprung up over south west France http://www.meteox.com/h.aspx?r=&jaar=-3&soort=satradar but I don't think that is the one that will come our way - probably have the effect of making it dull and damp tomorrow morning before it gets going as we go into the afternoon.

Still waiting for ESTOFEX to update...

Looking at recent high-res model runs, WRF has the MCS over SW France clipping the far SE tomorrow afternoon... but it's a fair bit behind on the timing of the initial development (takes until 3am tomorrow), so it'll probably turn up sooner than that.

Elsewhere there's a bit of afternoon precipitation - nothing much - followed by some moderate to heavy stuff moving up through the Solent 10-11pm and continuing NNE from there with slight intensification.

NAE is similar except for some heavier stuff moving up through Dorset tomorrow afternoon and heading N. from there while spreading out to form a wide zone of precipitation - a lot like what was seen last Tuesday.

To be honest it's a wait and see situation, as it always tends to be!
