Here's a report from 15 years ago on the summer of 1998 and the fact that the summer finally picked up. It wasn't a great summer but it was better than the horror of summer 2012

There was decent spell during early August in the south

1998 wasn't a great summer at all up here, little if any better than 2012 I from my recollection. It had the wettest July here since 1988 and then the poorest summer overall in my region since the washout of 1985. I do remember the warmer spell in early August though, while it lasted which wasn't long!

It was actually similar to 2012 here (more so in terms of temperature) - a cold and very wet June (108.2mm), a cold, but dry July, followed by a near-average August temperature-wise, but very dry again. Not a very good summer at all.
