Hello folks,

Here's the mid September to Mid October forecast from the amazing Terry  Scholey;

"Indian Summer" or an autumn washout?

I sure hope some of that more pleasant weather does come along - for the second year running, mid-September resembles mid-Autumn with the exception that the trees still have most of their leaves on. My subconscious is confused by the frequent gloominess and scarcity of useable weather.

From Terry S update:
'...however temperatures may continue to be disappointing for the time of year with further quite cool intervals expected, as the proximity of a weak solar maximum is enhanced further by a relatively quiet sun at the moment.'

Happy to be called picky, but is 'proximity' the right word here? Surely the sun remains roughly the same distance throught the year, give or take a few % for the Earth's elliptical orbit?
What is correct is the reference to activity. The solar disk is incredibly quiet considering we are approaching a solar max. The association between global circulation and temperatures and solar activity is very well researched and published, so this could well have a measurable impact on the NH winter this year.

I guess he meant close in time, for which proximity is arguably not the best of words. I've never considered a meeting to be in close proximity to me until I'm right outside the door; usually the word refers to space rather than time.

We may have already passed the solar maximum as Gavin P. has suggested. With activity very low right now, I can see where he's coming from.
