For the United Kingdom in October 2013 please give your predictions/estimates for the following:

The date of the latest 20.0°C:                 The date of the first 0°C:
The date of the first -3.0°C:
The highest offical temperature:          The lowest offical temperature:
The % of the average rainfall:               The % of the average sunshine:

'Official' refers to as given by Met Office reports. Sun and rain values are as on climate-uk.com.

Notice the exciting twist in that first category I hope that we'll keep on seeing temperatures into the 20's for a little way into October, ideally followed by some marked swings in temperature and a decent storm system or two.

Making up for lost time eh Caz? Nice one

I'll be honest and say that I'm waiting to see if any clear signs emerge as to just how prolonged the initial warm spell will be that starts October. It's the run-up to September all over again

Spending too much time in the pub as per usual Caz. Hopefully I will be sober tomorrow for long enough to make a guess on time.

All predictions recorded

New entrants are still allowed, but with a penalty of 0.5 up to midnight tonight and then the usual rules apply thereafter;

  • 1 point for each day late

  • half the maximum possible points for any category that predictions are given for after the conditions of that category have already been met, for example if a prediction for the first 0°C is given after the first 0°C has already occured

Hope that's clear enough for anyone catching this late

By the way... I've been trying to think of a better word than 'category' for each thing that we predict. What is a good word for 'thing that we predict'

I'm struggling to think of a suitable alternative to 'category', maybe 'question' ....and don't think a suitable alternative exists after using an online thesaurus. However, from a scientific mind the word 'variable' is all I can come up with.

From Monday I begin a regime of 21 hours of lectures and practicals a week plus almost as much personal studying. That'll keep me occupied

...and yeah, it looks like 'category' will have to do

I was thinking 'event' but they're not all events.  Highest, lowest, first etc that require dates could be, but average values aren't.  so I think category is the best description.

Enjoy fresher's week and new roles guys!

The October Prediction Game Graph

Finally found a bit of time to spend on the prediction game charts

Provisionally (as far as the final 20°C and max UK temp details go), we find the Snowman out in front with a monkeh not far behind, after which comes this strange Gooner thing, might be a new species...

Distinctly average for me so far, which is actually a little lucky because it really hasn't gone to plan in terms of temperatures
