Yeah, very cold here (south willamete valley). Early in the Week we broke several date records for record cold minima and low max. Then Friday it snowed near record amounts, amounting to more over a foot here (typically the Central Valley is very mild, rarely see snow or sub-zero temps). Now -15*C and the colder temperatures since 1972. Small possibility of breaking the all time coldest ever temperature since records began for th state. Never made it above -7*C Today, when the avg low is +2 and avg high +10 I'm trying to verify but I believe we have beaten the second coldest ever record cold temperature excluding 1972, records only go back to mid 19th c , but for sure this is unusual. The houses are not prepared for this. My heater can't keep up, even at max output I can't keep my apartment above 15*C

Cheers for the on the ground reprt Tim - very interesting.

Some very cold readings in Alberta and the Prairie provinces yesterday. -42c at Brooks, AB and even the major cities had lows in the -30 to -35c range - and that's before you factor in the windchill. For much of the Prairies temps may remain below -20c throughout the upcoming week!

Meanwhile in the east the storm moving through tonight and Monday doesn't look to be a prolific snowmaker for most. Looks like ice will be a bigger problem - especially in the NE States. It will probably be a snow to rain event for southwestern Ontario including Toronto with snowfall limited to 2-5cm generally. More like 10cm towards Ottawa and Montreal and perhaps 15cm for Quebec City. It then turns colder with the rest of the week looking subzero at this stage.

Well the arctic air has taken hold of much of Canada and the US this week, culminating in a nasty ice storm from northern Texas through Arkansas and into Tennessee, leaving hundreds of thousands without power while temperatures remain well below zero. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/12/06/us/weather-winter-storm/index.html?hpt=us_c1

The cold has a grip out west too with Vancouver and Seattle having ice days and the chance of snow for places in California that very rarely see it (e.g. Fresno).

The core of the arctic air is over the northern Plains into the Canadian Prairies. It's currently -30 or below in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Regina, with windchills for some in the mid minus 40s. Daytime highs will struggle into the mid minus 20s in the Prairies. Hopefully Peter will update us on the frigid conditions.

The eastern Gtreat Lakes and much of the NE States have excaped most of the wintry precipitation thus far but it's turning colder there too. Stewart may see some accumulating snow late tomorrow as a small storm rides up the coast and gives a mix of ice, snow and rain through the NE.

It may only be Dec 7th but winter has arrived with a vengeance across the pond.

Agreed about winter arrived with a vengeance as Toronto had a very cold November for very long time and it giving me interest how it will pan out by Jan when I go there.  I experienced -25.1C in Jan 2005 when the very cold arctic air with 22nd Jan major snow storm was bang on time in my stay there.

Once again the beauty of such great contrasts can be seen in weather conditions. Having visited Dallas in June, where it was 100F, they have had temps down to -5C by daytime during Saturday.

You almost cannot comprehend the swings...granted that was during the summer, but day time temps last week in DFW were around 27C, next day it had dropped around 40F, staggering numbers. T-shirt one day to winter jackets the next.

Seeing some of the images round DFW of the ice is incredible...knowing how it was during the summer. Even down the Houston region there have been low temps...the humidty during summer is crazy there...must be weird now particulary as the houses are all built to prevent the heat!

Hey folks,

Yeah we've had the Eagles game on up here, incredible pics and amazing in this h & s day and age that this is still allowed but brilliant to watch. Just wished it would come here....alas not as Graeme posted earlier it's currently -4c outside but only a little snow forecast for the lakeshore area this evening before a changeover to sleet and then rain.

Very brief snip of milder weather mind, we have had a couple of days of warmer air...+13c on Thurs for example before this cold snap arrived. As discussed, most of the rest of Canada is in the freezer right now and we will join them from tomorrow afternoon albiet with slightly modified temps compared to those seen in Saskatoon, SK etc.

Winter a week old and it's proper winter forecast for the foreseeable...now we need a storm or two to top it off before xmas. I'm here for xmas this year but flying home to Ayrshire for the new year...hopefully see some snow back home!

Hey folks,

-8c this morning with a biting wind coming off Lake Michigan all the way to our west. Some impressive lake-effect banding going on in two spots right now, to the north of Barrie up at Parry Sound and in the states near the shores of Lake Erie into the Buffalo area.

Here it's the odd flurry but we are now in the fridge if not the freezer this week. TWN reporting this morning that parts of Alberta are at -52c this morning, now that's a freezer!

Further ahead, eyes set now on the potential, love that word in weatherland.....the potential for a big storm to hit the GTA Saturday into Sunday. Further updates as and when, models have been all over the shop with this taking it anywhere from St.Louis to Boston!

Have a great day

The snow and ice cover over the USA is pretty impressive, especially for the beginning of 'meterological' winter.  Maybe another December 2010...but on the other side of the ocean.

-52c in Alberta...is that windchill or an actual temperature??

Hi folks, bone-chilling cold here today. Started the day down at -17c with a w/c of -23.  Was a real shocker, not warmed up much it's still -9c. We had some flurries yesterday afternoon all the way thru from Lake Michigan straddling the two Great Lakes Michigan and Ontario and on-tap for the potential on a decent sized snowevent over the weekend as the map shows below, courtesy of Accuweather :

We are borderline for very little to quite alot and so far EC don't seem concerned, we could see some rare but (as those who follow these things know) very productive Lake Onraio Westshore effect snows from this but time will time.

On the Eastern shore of Ontario some incredible snow totals in a very localised area in Oswego, County, NY. The Tug-Hill Plateu effect coming in, 44" as of this morning of snow on one or two spots, incredible.

Will update tomorrow on our storm potential

Morning folks, above is the NAM wx model for the run late last night showing a significant upgrade in this storm's ability in the GTA/Lakeshore area. As i mentioned yesterday there was a chance of lake-enhanced snow from this system if it tracked far enough N and W, as traditionally these things do. Now we are looking at a cracker of an early winter snowstorm here for Toronto/Kitchener/Hamilton and down into Niagara region. Especially for areas around here as that Easterly wind kicks in.

Environment Canada's statement :

City of Hamilton

5:33 AM EST Friday 13 December 2013
Special weather statement for
City of Hamilton continued

Widespread snowfall event possible this weekend.

A disturbance from the Southern Plains States is forecast to track northeast towards the Great Lakes. Latest indications suggest this low will follow a path across Central Ohio Saturday to Central New York State by Sunday morning.

As a result, snow ahead of this disturbance is expected to reach Southwestern Ontario tonight then spread northeast into the remainder of the regions on Saturday.

Current indications suggest a 10 to 15 cm snowfall event for many areas by Saturday night. This could be the first significant snowfall of the season for some locales including Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton and Toronto which so far have escaped most of the lake effect snowstorms experienced over the past couple of weeks.

There is some potential for locally higher amounts of snow from this system in areas around the west end of Lake Ontario, as cold easterly winds pick up extra moisture from the relatively mild waters of the lake. Areas near the north shore of Lake Erie may also receive higher amounts as they will be closest to the track of the low.

How far north the snow spreads into the regions and the total snowfall amounts received will depend on the exact track and intensity of this disturbance. If the low pressure centre tracks a little further north than currently expected, total snowfall amounts may be somewhat higher by Sunday morning.

Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions after the snow arrives by Saturday.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca.
