But people aren't going to switch the heating on because the newspaper tells them it's cold! They'll switch it on if they feel cold. Can't see it making much difference to be honest.

Agree entirely and I think previous posters have just about said it all. We have a couple of people at work who regularly come in with stories of what the weather's going to be next week because the newspapers say so. They are regularly wrong of course but they never learn! You'd think they'd give up the faith, but they don't! I think it's just sad that they buy papers to read such fiction over and over again.
No, but the elderly may not switch on the heating when they need to due to concerns about spreading the meagre pennies over a winter that is severe and of long duration. Don't forget, these old folks have seen such winters in the past - what is fantasy to most on here may make them quake in their carpet slippers.
What about the people in rural areas who rely on advance deliveries of heating oil? No doubt some of these people have been scared into taking larger, earlier deliveries of oil, which of course would make a difference.
