Yes, it's mild, wet and windy..... but I'd much prefer that to cold, wet and windy.   Despite the fact snow has been more of a feature in last few years than the previous couple of decades, the last few winters' have had more than their fair share of raw, rainswept days too.

12c, wind and rain is a good deal better than the (not infrequently experienced over the past few years) 2c, wind and rain whilst negotiating half-frozen slush!!   For instance, today i walked the dog in wind and rain...  though not exactly my chosen weather, the temperature meant it was bearable.

A glass half-full is much better for the soul!

8th crap day in a row here to round off the mildest ever December week with a ridiculous mean temperature over 9C

Just vile today - dark, gloomy windy and raining. Almost as bad as the Saturday before Christmas last year. Utterly awful unseasonable filth and yesterday was barely any better. Even people at work who hate cold and snow were complaining about the gloom yesterday saying how much better it would be if it were clear and frosty.

Really can't think of anything positive to say about this disgusting, depressing spell. Yet again the temperature is continuing to rise after dark - up to 8.9C. If it hadn't went down to 3.8C in clearer skies last night - which did not appear until after dark yesterday and were gone by morning - then we would have completed a full week without dropping below 6C

My moan is that it now looks like December is a complete write-off down here in terms of deep cold and snow, with not even a sniff of -10C 850s. That's most unusual in the post-2000 era, as there's usually at least one wacky wild outlier each day to get your teeth into. The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised to see the first half of January being written off either, although it won't be until later next week that we get a better idea of that (via ECM32 and to a lesser extent GEFS).

This winter is turning into a disaster. It's been way too cold for way too long already. Yesterday got down to a ridiculous 12c. Just hoping the potential temps of 14c or so come to fruition soon. In the meantime the cruel winter continues with no let up to the cold in sight [sn_dead]

Doesn't even feel that mild up here, yesterday afternoon was cold and windy about 6c after some sleet and 4c at breakfast time and today it's 0c with a frost.

During zonal spells it's remarkable how big the temperature difference can be across the uk.

This zonal spell reminds me of January 1993 which culminated in the Braer Storm.

Such intense spells of zonality tend to blow themselves out after 3 -4 weeks to be followed by a Bartlett High which in February 1993 led to a mild month although it did turn much colder at the end.

My money is on a mild January, colder February but any wintry weather will be too little, too late.

John Dalys quote below really rings true this winter!

Rough time for the festivities more than likely. Cold westerly's  =Gales and possible flooding. It  is not going to be happy weather-wise.

Not really any moans from me so far - no air frost yet and heating bills staying relatively low, and footy not getting frozen off left right and centre. That said, if this stormy pattern stays then we will probably lose some games to waterlogged pitches.

I hope this stormy spell doesnt last too long though.. need that Bartlett back  a la Jan 89, but it does look like we are in for a couple of weeks of storminess at times......

Having said that, this morning was quite pleasant - a bit of blue sky, gentler wind and still pleasant temperatures.

I'm not caring too much about the lack of snow but today has been the third grey, damp and sunless day in a row and it's starting to grate a little (although to be fair, I did get to see a gorgeous colourful sun rise yesterday morning).
And we may have to put up with damaging gale force winds tomorrow night. Once again, why is it that the strongest winds always seem to occur in the night time?
Still, hopefully that squally stuff will have the effect of clearing the air up a bit.
