No trains on the SWT network before 10am due to 28 trees down and 6 areas of flooding.

Looks like I will be driving up to work in London. I'll try and get a couple of hours' kip first. Hope the winds die down soon for those still getting battered. It's all gone quiet here now (both outside and inside thankfully!)

And... it's through! Temperature's dropping slowly, the rain has eased and the relative silence is deafening. Phew, just run-of-the-mill 20 or low 30-something gusts now.

At a quick glance it looks like everything's intact although it's pretty dark out there, a full check will have to wait until daylight.

As this trough exits stage right, it's now the turn of the north and west... good luck guys!

Roughest period of sustained winds for many a year. I've spent most of that windy spell at work in Basingstoke so haven't undertaken any damage assessment at home yet. Hopefully I'll manage to get home OK!

What promised to be a quiet night shift was far from it. Fww, all the issues here have been water related(as usual) !!!

Up early after going to bed late following this storm. Walked onto landing and there's a line of dampness where water had been coming through the loft hatch......wondering if tiles have gone or if the wind has just forced water into the loft void. Can't get up there till daylight as kids asleep.

Edit....downstairs our door mat and carpet are sodden as the wind literally forced the rain under the front door. Never seen anything like this before.

Reading through the BBC live text/twitterf feed , reports of people from aircraft ! Sounds like a true nightmare: people hovering over airports in this storm for up to an hour, aborted attempts at landing (luton) and reports of 'Magician' pilots being able to land in this weather. Well done to all

Interesting journey home from Basingstoke to Alton. Many trees down but the chain saw gangs are out which is just as well. Quite a few places where only one car can pass but the drivers are being sensible as they were after the stingjet in October

winds have died down now but local radio has reports of over 100 roads effected by fallen trees or power lines. Flood warnings out now and the meadows and streams are overflowing.

Very low pressure and continuing to fall. Just now 940.2hPa. Wind, well it's stormy but it has been much worse. Peak so far this morning has been 68mph here, with 50mph in very sheltered Portree. Expecting the highest speeds later today.

We have squally hail, sleet and wet snow showers to sea level, it feels raw.

Only lost one fence panel, strongest gust 43mph (sheltered spot), 32mm of rain.

Hope everyone out there is OK and no major damage

Damage report:

From what I can see there is no damage at all to our gardens or property.

The neighbours to our left have had a 40ft tree fall down, which has destroyed their left-hand fence and is now sitting in their left-hand neighbours garden. The top of the tree has damaged their annex at the back of the garden, but it only looks minor.. perhaps a broken window at worst. But that was very lucky. A couple of metres difference and it would have squished the whole thing.

Meanwhile, one of their own trees has fallen in line with the 40ft one, and has destroyed much of their left-hand fence. So their garden is now without any fences and is just an amass of tree debris.

All looks ok out the front and on the railway line. Fulwell station has apparently experienced some flooding though.

Southern trains (basically Surrey and Sussex into London) not operating until further notice - 70 fallen trees and the Balcombe tunnel (main Brighton line) flooded.

On the roads, the A27 eastbound closed for flooding from near Havant through and past Chichester despite recent drainage work which was supposed to solve the problem - 60mm rain and 70mph gusts reported widely

What a night. The wind 'switched off' at around 06.20hrs. The constant humming/ roaring of the previous 15 hours suddenly fell eerily silent after a final gusty flourish.

One to remember..not enjoyable either.

IMBY, just a wet and windy night. Peak gust of 48mph, not as high as December 5th (58mph) or October 28th (77mph). A few thousand homes without power in Suffolk, if reports are accurate, but not the scores of thousands that went off in the county in the St Judes day storm, when trees were still in leaf.

A lot of rail disruption locally, though - trees in wet banked ground are always vulnerable.

100,000 homes lost power in the south. Let's hope they get reconnected as soon as possible. Always very greateful to the engineers that have to go out is awful conditions to rectify the damage. Hats off to them

Meanwhile up here average speeds are blowing 54mph (storm force 10) with gusts to 75mph.

In the cold light of day it seems we've almost escaped, other than two large fence panels blowing down at the back. Unfortunately for the neighbour they've blown into their greenhouse - and IIRC it was the neighbours who erected the fence, so they won't be happy!

Some large 24hr precip totals showing up on the 0600 Synops.....the highest I can find is  69.2mm but most of southern England has had over an inch...www.weatherobs.com.   If you haven't come across this page before go to Marker drop down in the top left corner and select 24hr precipitation.
