Nothing more than some gusty winds overnight, with a maximum gust of 45mph. Fair amount of rain overnight though, and the Ouse is on the rise

Much worse imby than the st Jude effort! Wind was ferocious and prolonged and the rain was substantial and unrelenting. Sheltered in he pub for a while then got a lift home from mother, aqua planed most of the way such was the amount of surface water! Trees and debris everywhere and floods galore......

Very low pressure and continuing to fall. Just now 940.2hPa

In the cold light of day it seems we've almost escaped, other than two large fence panels blowing down at the back. Unfortunately for the neighbour they've blown into their greenhouse - and IIRC it was the neighbours who erected the fence, so they won't be happy!

Pressure may have bottomed out at 939.8hPa, seems stable at 940hPa just now.

Take care everyone.

I think I can safely say that this was the windiest spell here for at least 10 years. I have only lived on this hilltop location for the last 7 years and it was certainly the worst winds since living here. My peak gusts were at 1:00pm and again in the evening when 59mph was recorded. With regard to rainfall I measured 49.0mm up until midnight but the 24 hour total to 7am this morning was 57mm..the wettest day I have recorded for 15 years. Currently lovely and sunny and relatively calm.

The BBC replayed a memorable shipping forecast from overnight:

"Dover, Wight: Storm force 10 to Hurricane force 12."

I do wonder what the ferry companies were doing setting out last night to cross the Channel given the forecasts.

Out and about this morning to get papers and check on The Folks.

Fortunately no obvious damage to my property of theirs, but one of my neighbours has lost an entire 80 Ft length of 8' high garden wall - that will cost to put right!  It would have helped if the  bodgers who built the estate in the late 80s had used that "new fangled" cement stuff in their motar mix -I've already had to have repointing done, the ridge cemented and flashing pointed  in - which is really not on for a house this  old !)

A tree came down in the village demolishing an ancient wall - Tree intermingled with orange brick and lime mortar blocking half the road – right ol’ mess.
There are Biblical floods on the back roads between me and my parents, from field runoff.  I know the roads like the back of my hand, so proceeded with care (I knew there were no manholes there and could gauge the depth to be below the door seals of the car – close run thing in places though !

The stream through the village is within a couple of inches of the top of its banks. The River Enborne in full flood - the "idylic" houses people have built next to it  on the flood plain  () will be dampened.

Just reading some of the reports from the previous thread, some crazy wind speeds about.

The worst of it hit here arround midnight peaking a Storm F10 gusting to 75MPH. Not record breaking but certainly pretty extreem.

Few trees down thankfully nobody was seriously injured.

Looks like Kent bore the brunt of it power wise - 1/3 of the houses in my road are without power today. (We have overhead power lines and one of them was sparking at half two this morning, lit things up like lightning!)

From Press releases - 24 December 2013 10:06 AM

UK Power Networks delivers power to 8million customers across the South East, East of England and London.

The electricity network is built to be resilient however high winds blowing debris and trees onto overhead power lines overnight have caused extensive damage - which engineers are working to fix.

The following numbers of customers are currently without power, although these numbers will change as power is restored and more incidents are reported this morning:

Kent: 27,360
Surrey: 17,980
Sussex: 8,770
Bedfordshire: 120
Buckinghamshire: 90
Cambridgeshire: 227
Essex: 1,750
Hertfordshire: 670
Norfolk: 1,800
Suffolk: 890

Meanwhile I made it to work by car - only just over 1 hour from Hampshire to Tower Bridge on very empty roads! SW Trains had no service till 10am at the earliest so I decided to drive. A slightly dodgy bit on the way out of Yateley where Handford Lane was flooded, but passable by going up on the pavement....

Like already reported the clear up is under way and powerlines wiped out over large areas of the S.E. I have been from Guildford to Aldershot and encountered deep water and trees in the road then clearances then more trees and floods up to the numberplates just about passable.

Down to 931mb at the centre but it doesn't seem to be deepening much now. Lowest UK pressure on there appears to be 937.0mb at Stornoway, but the Met Office site lists 938mb for 11am.
