One word for December 2013 - STORMY.

I recorded my all time high gust speed of 102mph at 06:06 on the 5th. There were just 5 days where peak gust speeds fell below 50mph. There were 5 days where peak gusts exceeded 80mph. Only 1 days saw a gust of less than 30mph! It was also wet, as you'd expect from Atlantic driven systems, just 2 days with no measurable rainfall. It has been mild with not a single frost or sub zero temperature recorded in the month. Not only did I see record breaking wind speeds, but also low pressure. On the 24th pressure fell to a very low 938.3hPa, lower than anthing I have recorded up here in over 6 years.

Wettest December since I moved to Chineham in the summer of 2005. Not the warmest though. 2011 and 2006 were slightly warmer.

03 January 2014 20:30:13

Here is the official analysis from the Met Office. A bit of everything in December

  • Very warm - highest temperature 16.6C

  • Fifth warmest December in Scotland since 1910

  • Fewest frosts in Scotland since 1988

  • Very windy - highest gust 109mph in Wales

  • Windiest December since records began in 1969

  • Lowest pressure at a UK land station for many years - 936mb at Stornoway

  • Very wet - 154% of mean rainfall over the UK as a whole but many places seeing more than double the average

  • Only sunshine was about average with 108% of the mean

December was certainly not a boring month weather wise

The ground frost and grass minimum anomalies in highland Scotland are remarkable

The rainfall anomaly map is also very interesting with Scotland and the south coast of England from Dorset east standing out with more than double the average in many areas. Conversely parts of Eastern England, particularly around the Humber were very dry.

In my temperature records since 2003 (all values in Celsius) December 2013 saw:

The second highest average maximum at 9.05, behind 2006 (an incredible 9.9). It was 1.25 above the LTA.

The average minimum was the 3rd highest at 3.67, behind 2011 (4.17) and 2006 (4.81). In 2010 it was -2.6...!

The overall mean just about beat 2011's 6.31 but at 6.36 it still falls well short of 2006's 7.35... that year was insane.

Sunshine was somehow 19.5 hours above the LTA and the third sunniest I've recorded since 2005. I suppose we did get a few sunny days here and there...

Rainfall is the most interesting measure of December 2013. In my records from 2005, it was the wettest, beating 2012 by 30.8mm. The next wettest is 2006 at 110.6mm.

What makes December 2013 truly remarkable is the fact that the first 12 days saw no appreciable rainfall, continuing a 21 day dry spell that started on 22nd November. This means that the 182mm observed fell across a 19 day period, giving an average of 9.6mm per day. That's something like having moderate rain for 4-5 hours of each day. There was one day day in the 19 day period, but that doesn't change the figures all that much.

Up to the end of yesterday, January 2014 has seen 69.8mm across 5 days, averaging at 14mm per day, so maybe it's thinking about stealing the title from December 2013!

i knew it had been wet here in west hants, but 182mm is an impressive total for this area . 3 times the total of the north york moors and although a lot lower than glenogles , considering the location a large total not forgetting an extremely wet start to januarywhich has lead to many road closures in the area. today the main blandford to salisbury road was closed at coombe bisset which does not happen often . there is a huge quantity of water coming off the downs and i wonder how high the avon will go in 2-3 days.
