But the metoffice may have a point, a good 50% of the ensembles are still showing basically no cold at all. It would be foolish to enphasise a cold spell when there is only a 1/2 chance of it even happening. I am starting to see downgrades too; the models peaked at 12Z yesterday and there have been gradual downgrades since. It wouldn't take many more to cause the easterly to dematerialise.

The recent storms that have brought heavy rain and floods to much of the UK cannot definitely be linked to climate change, says the Met Office.

The Daily Telegraph in today's edition has written the biggest load of weather rubbish imaginable today...
Front page states that cold air arriving from the USA will give us the first proper taste of winter this weekend. What a load of rubbish!
If what I read on the TWO forums is correct much of the UK will have cooler and somewhat dryer conditions this weekend and into next week with temperatures in the south at least around 7-9 degrees, Hardly an icy blast!!

A great article about the history of televised weather forecasts on the Beeb - this is their 60th anniversary year.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25665340

There are some interesting snippets in there, for example fronts were named after their similarity on maps to WW1 battle fronts and the contract for the crummy current maps is up for renewal... here's hoping they go back in-house rather than sticking with 2005-era sludge graphics.

Ok everyone this is why I get confused. Up until yesterday - a few days ago the Met Office update were forecasting "colder weather by the end of month, or a risk of colder weather, wintry conditions developing, below average temperatures," less unsettled condition yet now today take a read: -Also in the immidiate update it says becoming less cold?? like what? Unless they consider Sunday (forecasted 9c here) is cold?

UK Outlook for Tuesday 14 Jan 2014 to Thursday 23 Jan 2014:

On Tuesday there will be some rain over northeast Scotland and showers in the west and southwest. However eastern parts are likely to be fine and dry, with frost and a risk of fog patches at first. Strong winds and further rain, heavy at times, are likely to spread from the southwest during Wednesday. Through the week it may become cold in the northeast, with strong easterly winds and wintry showers. Western and southwestern parts are probably going to be less cold and cloudier with further rain. Later in the month it is likely to become less cold and more changeable, with sunny spells and showers or longer periods of rain, these perhaps more likely in the northwest.

UK Outlook for Friday 24 Jan 2014 to Friday 7 Feb 2014:

Whilst current indications point towards changeable conditions persisting late in January, they are not expected to be as stormy as the start of the month. This would mean outbreaks of rain mainly affecting northwestern parts of the UK, spreading further southeast at times but tending to weaken. The best of the dry and brighter weather should remain in the southeast. Some periods of colder weather are likely, particularly in between weather systems, but overall temperatures may well remain near normal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could this be a winter where we see no northerly wind or colder weather? I know it's still early stages but as we approach mid-winter and we look towards spring and with no easterly, blocking, northerly wind picked up on the GFS or any models I think it's fair to say that this winter will be the one that never was. We have been stuck in constant Autumn.

Colder air coming from the west, originating in the US and Canada. Not very cold, but colder than what we have now.

For once they are correct, although it will be a brief affair and only bring snow to high ground in the north.

I looked at the temp for next week and besides 8c is not cold, that's still above average temperature for here in the SW. Average temperature should be around 6 or 7c.

I haven't seen the article in question. Did they really say -13C and blizzards? That doesn't sound very Telegraph. Perhaps Nathan Rao has done a job swap from the Express...

Weve all been there in our early days following the weather.... telling friends, telling family about impededing storms and snows... to be followed by standard british non extreme weather, and the usual egg on face.

One can only hope with time, they become a little more pessimistic like ...ahem...'most' of us on here....

UK Outlook for Wednesday 15 Jan 2014 to Friday 24 Jan 2014:

Rain and hill snow in the far northeast will clear through Wednesday. Further rain will move northeastwards through Wednesday and into Thursday with heavy rain at times and hill snow across the north and east. It will turn windy with mild conditions in the southwest but rather cold temperatures in the far north and east. From Friday (17th) to Sunday (19th), southern and western areas are likely to be unsettled with strong winds and rain at times, and temperatures near or just below average. Although rain is expected elsewhere, there should be more prolonged drier interludes, although it is likely to be colder with a greater risk of frost and ice. The end of the period looks most likely to be unsettled with temperatures remaining near or just below average.

UK Outlook for Saturday 25 Jan 2014 to Saturday 8 Feb 2014:

Whilst current indications point towards changeable conditions persisting into late January and early February, they are not expected to be as stormy as the start of this month. The most likely scenario during this period would see northwestern parts of the UK affected by the most frequent bouts of unsettled weather leaving southern and eastern regions tending to see the most prolonged spells of drier and brighter conditions. Some periods of colder weather are likely, particularly between weather systems, but overall temperatures may well remain near normal.
