Bit of thunder in Reading... torrential downpour incoming!

This kind of energetic convection from a long-fetch onshore flow is what helped November 2009 to achieve over 200mm of rainfall. It's unpredictable and potentially dangerous in places prone to flash-flooding when soils are saturated.

Been an active day in Alton. Absolute deluge around 2.30 this afternoon with hail. Had a further brief but intense burst of hail around 4.30pm

More storms about this morning. Plenty of sferics across the SW and there was torrential rain in Basingstoke around 5am

Squall just went through Torquay. I was watching it over Cornwall for a long time and wouldn't go out until it passed with all the electrical activity recently. As it went over Torbay it intensified with violent winds, lightning, and large hail making louder noises than other hail of late (you could hear it was large). Also this was the first power cut out of all the storms recently which lasted about 5 seconds, long enough for everything in the house to go off and be in darkness, I have storm supplies for power cuts but they were not needed. Lightning was blue. Temperatures dropped markedly as it approached, they kept dropping for about 45 minutes before it hit.

Now I can finaly leave the house without cr*pping myself.

London area looks like it will get hit quite badly in the next few hours. Seems to be two areas of squall converging

Got a bit biblical for a time here this morning, now easing off after 20 minutes of often huge rain drops falling fast with the odd rumble of thunder. If I didn't know better I'd say it was an afternoon downpour in late April...!

What's the betting that squall line will fizzle out by the time that arrives here at Kent? Like most squall lines seem to do as The Downs or the East Sussex/Kent border must act like some kind of dampening field.

Either or, I'll find out in a couple of hours time anyway.

That rain was quite something this morning. Coincided with my cycle to the station and it was like riding through a car wash!

Then when I got to London the squall line had caught up and dumped on me again. Certainly not boring this winter weather!

And now the sun is back out again.

A proper downpour south of Guildford today at 12pmish, one where it was coming down in sheets (stairrods) and for 10 mins. Could'nt see far ahead it was that heavy.

I witnessed some really intense rain and hail at around 08.30/09.00 this morning with some lightning and earthumping claps of thunder, nice start to the new year.

For me that's big hailstones and a bit bigger than the pea sized ones we had that day. Can't get a link but if you look up the Frome standard click on news, page three and look at readers pics.

Bit of electrification to the SW now.

Slight tornado risk from a few more organised cells.

Otherwise, standard April showers.

Oh wait.

Single lightning discharge recorded by Cheryl in Alton during the passage of a big convection line around 4.15pm. Bren also just reported thunder from Weybridge(Surrey) just now. Lots of hail as well
