100 years ago today, 7th January 1914, was a very mild day. Maxima of 12.8C at Crieff and 13.3C at Gordon Castle were recorded.

As soon as I saw those dire charts I knew there would be no cold here. The 7th was actually the coldest with a min of -1C thereafter mins of 1-4C and maxes of 2-7C up to the 13th with no sunshine at all for a whole week  About the only thing that could make this current winter even more appalling than it's been so far.

That winter was a complete write-off. One of the mildest and least snowy on record. The only snow I have noted are brief falls in the first and last weeks of December and on the 6th January.

Late January saw the mildest temperatures of the month with maxima of 52F on the 24th, 55F on the 25th and 53F on both the 30th and 31st. This led to a ridiculously mild February with a lowest max of 44F (6.7C) which is the mildest coldest max I am aware of for any winter month. There was just no cold to speak of with 29F the lowest temperature in January and 30F in February

Seems to be a lot of nasty things from that era repeating themselves exactly a century later. First there was the washout summer of 1912 repeating itself in 2012 now winter 1913/14 repeating itself in winter 2013/14. The whole period 1911-14 was in fact very snowless just like 2011 onwards has proven to be. Probably the second most snowless period of the century behind 1988-92.
