January 1948 is the wettest January on record for England and Wales in the 1772 series with 176.8mm.

It was unsurprisingly a cyclonic month.

The high totals on the NE coast e.g. 8" in Newcastle suggest a near stationary low and onshore wind at some point.

So could be top ten, probably not top five.

More eastern areas really haven't been that wet, for example here we are still (just) below 100mm.
2008 was 151mm, we won't reach that in a week, average is about 80mm.
It's a similar story down through Lincs at least.

How do the totals for December + January stack up.  My totals are 175.8mm for December 2013 and even locally, this was exceeded, 144.6mm for January, thus far.
