The prediction game had an entertaining year in 2013, with plenty of banter and speculation and, I'm pleased to report, hardly a trace of gloating or bad tempers

All members of this forum are invited to join in each month, and those who are persistent across multiple months get to see their names in the league tables both seasonally and annually

The prize for 1st place? The right to wear a massive grin on your face

It is by and large a game of luck, although yes, looking at forecasts and charts does tend to be helpful with regards to the first week of the month

It is not unreasonable to just throw out numbers that you like the sound of or have some favourism towards - provided they're physically possible of course

I will be posting the event categories soon - they follow a simple format;

first are three 'temperature threshold' events e.g. the first -7.5*C to be officially recorded in the UK by a Met Office station.

then comes the UK extremes - the highest and lowest UK temperatues to be officially recorded by a Met Office station.

After than comes the % of the average sunshine and rainfall.

For the last of those, climate-uk seems to have been abandoned now, so it looks like I need a new resource for those stats - does anyone know of a good one (if not, the Met Office summary would have to do, but that takes some time to be released)? Thanks

Oh all right, here you go:

For the UK in February 2014 and going by the official Met Office station reports what/when will be:

- The first -5*C       - The number of days above 10*C       - The number of nights failing to reach 0*C (not usually frequent!)

- The highest UK temperature?              - The lowest UK temperature?

- The rainfall as a percentage of the long term average?              - The sunshine as a percentage of the LTA?

As you may have guessed, I am being careful when setting the categories, in order to try and avoid having ones that are met within the first few days of the month

I'll have a go;

- The first -5 C = 8th Feb

- The number of days above 10 C = 6

- The number of nights failing to reach 0 C = 1

- The highest UK temperature? = 13.2 C

- The lowest UK temperature? = -12 C

- The rainfall as a percentage of the long term average? = 140%

- The sunshine as a percentage of the LTA? = 70%

To summarise, mostly very wet and windy!

So will I; are these against CET or other UK average?

- The first -5 C = 18th Feb

- The number of days with somewhere above 10 C = 14

- The number of nights with anywhere failing to reach 0 C = 5

- The highest UK temperature? = 16.1 C

- The lowest UK temperature? = -7.5 C

- The rainfall as a percentage of the long term average? = 175%

- The sunshine as a percentage of the LTA? = 65%

Wet, cloudy, windy and mild...
