Well, January finished with a flourish. Down the road in Fleet, another 24.4mm brought the total up to a massive 208.4mm, the wettest month on record since this station started recording in 1997.

There seems to have been notably less rain north of the M3, evidenced by the difference between Odiham and Chineham (about 6 miles apart) as posted by Global Warming.

My nearest unofficial weather station in Wokingham (as reported on uk.sci.weather) got the following:

January rainfall a new record, total 153.9 mm, 248% of average, 15.7 mm
above the previous January record in 1995, records began in 1882

Unlike areas to our north that have had below average rainfall, and areas to our south that have had higher than average, we on Skye are pretty much bang on for a typical Jan (though the Jan average for Skye is wide, anything from just under 100mm to 500mm in the mountains):

Portree: 168.9mm

Shulista: 79.8mm

152.6mm the final total here which is 249% of average and my 2nd wettest month after October 2009. Measurable rainfall on 25 days Only 31.6mm fell up to the 16th which meant that 121.0mm fell from the 17th to 31st which is 407% of average for that period

2nd wettest January locally since records began in 1856. Only January 1937 was wetter with 177mm at Craibstone but there was a heavy snowfall in the last week so never before have we had such a large total made up of rain only. Truly awful

Actually Darren the difference is likely to be down to the siting of the rain gauges. My figure of 154.2mm is from my VP2 where the rain gauge is sited slightly higher than the thermometer as it is an integrated unit with the rain gauge above the thermometer housing (i.e. nearly 5 feet off the ground).

I have another manual rain gauge sited 30cm off the ground and that recorded a whopping 218.9mm in January. It is very common for the gauge near the ground to record a higher figure (often 40% more), particularly in stormy conditions where the gauge at height gets much less rain due to the greater effect of swirling winds and other factors.

Its easily the wettest month I have recorded since 1982 here in Watford with my final total of 143.4mm of rain with yesterday's total of 17.7mm. Yesterday's total was the highest daily total in the last 12 months.

It's the second wettest January I've recorded in 32 years - the wettest being Jan 2008 with 139mm.

Looking at the final regional totals both South-East England and South West England / Wales broke their records for January. The series goes back as far as 1873

South-East England total 179mm which is 255% of the long run mean (smashing the previous record of 146mm in 1877)

South-West England & Wales total 231mm which is 201% of the long run mean (previous record 224mm 1988)
