A thread with this title is normally reserved for very cold winters but remarkably many recording stations in Cumbria have yet to record a temperature of 10c in 2014.

No I am serious, Penrith last recorded 10c on December 29th, since then although January was mild this figure has not been reached, instead the temperature has been stuck between 3c and 7c for days and even weeks on end. In addition several stations in Cumbria have yet to record an air frost so several stations have had absolute maximum and minimum temperatures between 0c and 10c for over 7 weeks!

This winter throws up one crap record after another but the lack of very mild days in such a mild winter is bizarre and I suppose is due to the strong westerly winds which has prevented temperatures moving too far away from that of the Atlantic Ocean to our west.

Anyone else got any more strange temperature figures?

Same up here. That very mild second week of December had several > 10C days. Since then none and only one > 9C and a couple over 8C. Only a few air frosts and nothing below -3C. No more than a couple of cms snow at any one time either. Different world in the hills though. Just back from Glenshee where higher up there are metres of the stuff in places.

Similar here, been a long time since we reached 10C in this location. In fact in 4 weeks the air temp has rarely reached 8C. Looking at my records on average it's been between 5 and 7C this Winter most days here. With the wind blowing on many of those days it has felt cold with a sub zero windchill. Whilst it has not been a bitter Winter it hasn't felt all that mild either when out and about.

10C was last recorded four hours ago here.

Of more note is the way that the coldest temperature this "winter" (I use the term loosely) is just -2.4C - and we've only had two air frosts since the 1st December. Quite remarkable.

Not since 15th December. This winter has been revolting beyond belief due to the preponderance of south easterly winds giving excessive rainfall and extreme lack of temperature variation

It hasn't even reached 9C since then so the lack of mild is even more extreme than in winter 2009/10 when it reached 9.7C on 27th January. The highest since 15th December has been just 8.8C, the lowest maximum 3.1C and the lowest minimum -2.5C

44 of the last 61 days have had a maximum between 5.0C and 7.5C and the range of 11.3C in 8 weeks is just ridiculous. I looked at a lot of equatorial locations with the most boring equable climates on earth and could hardly find anywhere with a similarly low temperature variation over the same period. Just Kingston, Jamaica (11C) and Bridgetown, Barbados (8C). That just says it all. Even Singapore has seen a 13C range in the last 8 weeks.

The 27th February last year saw more temperature variation in just a few hours with the min rising from -3.0C to a max of 10.7C. I wish we could see a similar high pressure set-up now.

A season more monontonous, unvaried, unpleasant and uninteresting would be hard to find

Last 10c recorded here (Leuchars figures) was 14th December, the last of 7 consecutive >10c days.

The scarcity of air frosts in some locations this winter is remarkable. At Glasgow Bishopton the lowest reading for the whole winter is -0.1c!
