Has a potential snowfall on Friday slipped under the radar?

The latest fax shows a small depression running along the south coast on Friday with light winds and sub 528dam air just to the north.

That's a classic evaporation snowfall scenario with areas from Cardiff to London along the M4 corridor most at risk with the low,s current path. No mention on the Beeb but the potential is there.

It would be typical if Brian G got the only low level snowfall of the winter!

Valid comment, an outside chance for sure

Depressional track remains key, but theres no doubting the combination of ambient cold air on the northern flank of the feature, and the heaviness of precipitation could well lead to an evaporative cooling snow event, albeit wet.

This is by no means a forecast from me of a snowfall but it would be notable as I haven't seen any falling snow here since last April

Yes, the wintry potential was mentioned after the 10pm news last night. One they are keeping an eye on...

Warnings out from the MetO for friday for snow: as one would expect at this range given the uncertain track of the low the area covered is quite large, and favours areas with altitude. Still, some temporary snow at lower levels isn't ruled out.

You wouldn't rule out a cheeky evaporative cooling snow event down here on Saturday based on these marginal parameters in heavy precipitation.

EDIT... Deeper analysis shows that Saturday potential is indeed there.

Bit hard to get excited about this "potential snow risk" for the favoured few when in general all it's going to do is to bring yet more persistent and sometimes heavy cold rain to Southern England and the South East tomorrow, thus providing a renewed risk of flooding - not good for prone areas trying to recover from that.

I want proper spring-like mildness, sunshine and dryness which I have enjoyed on occasions in the past couple of weeks, not more of this rubbish.

Still, at least this time round winds are expected to be lighter at this end so that's one saving grace I suppose (makes a change).

PS: Sorry about the grumpy sounding post, I guess it's where I've just woken up to gale force southerly wind (yet again) and blustery rain this morning. This is enough to turn us all into Richardabdns.

None of the mainstream models making much of the snow risk, with differences in track and intensity only and a shift south from yesterday.
At the current time it's a rain event only except on highest Brecons, Mendips and Cotswolds for instance.

They seem more bullish about snow than the models appear to show - time will tell.

Usual places I suspect - i.e. the high ground. I bet blooming Cinderford and the Forest of Dean gets some! And then they'll show it on Points West just to upset me...

Thanks Rob. That chart seals the deal on a completely snowless winter around these parts.

Euro4 now dropped all snow signatures - not surprising given the parameters.
UKMO high-res and GLOSS must be showing something for the warnings to be issued though.
