I'm posting this in the main weather forum for maximum visibility. Afterwards it can be moved to Science and Nature...

Someone has just posted this photo on Facebook, taken from Brentwood, Essex. If the Northern Lights can be seen this far south, presumably just about anywhere in the UK has a chance of seeing them.

Unfortunately, my little patch of Berkshire has lots of light pollution from the rest of Arborfield, and Lower Earley and Winnersh to the north of it, so I can't see anything. But those of you in more rural locations, can you see anything?

Had a look outside here but couldn't see anything.  There is some light pollution from a nearby roundabout  but the village lighting is quite sebdued  and I'm in the northern part of the village so the sky to the north is quite dark - I'm pretty sure  there wasn't anything going on when I looked.

Nothing here. I'm guessing that Chelmsford must be on fire.

I didn't see it - apart from getting huge amounts of mud on my boots and trousers.

Last time I saw the northern lights was about 4 years ago at close to midnight on the way back from the pub.

And no - I hadn't had too much.

And here's the X4 CME from a few days ago that's responsible:

Field strengths have settled now from earlier. Unfortunately, my text alert didn't get picked-up in time so I missed it.

Not the best photo of the Aurora you'll ever see but given the light pollution from the city and the view over hundreds of streretlights it could be worse I suppose.

Northern scotland could see a real treat over the next hour or so. Possibly even northern lights overhead for the northern isles. Easily visible into southern scotland too.

I have never seen an Aurora which is something I want to rectify this year. The photo from Doc gives a good indication of how vivid they can be, and stand out well even with all the light pollution.

Nice pic Doc

The one and only time I've seen them this far south was back in October 1992.

Had a peep at 12 am as skies was clear at that time but couldn't see anything. Obviously I was too far south then there is the light pollution.

Naturally Wild's Heather Devey had stunning views of @northyorkmoors last night. Did anyone else see it?
