First time I've done this - here you go!

- The first -5 C = 14th Feb

- The number of days with somewhere above 10 C = 13

- The number of nights with anywhere failing to reach 0 C = 10

- The highest UK temperature? = 13.1 C

- The lowest UK temperature? = -8.3 C

- The rainfall as a percentage of the long term average? = 150%

- The sunshine as a percentage of the LTA? = 80%

Very wet first half, coldish spell by mid-month with a little snow, but nothing on the scale of previous years.  Average and non-descript final third.

So what are the % figures to be compared with? The Reading website page by Brugge is handy for individual stations, but doesn't give averages for the whole UK as far as I can tell. This means I'll probably be looking at the Met Office summary for the figures, which is usually released within a week or so of the end of a given month, although I've seen much longer delays in the past, which is a concern.

I use % values so that predictions feel more intuitive... or least that's the idea!

Finally, a big welcome to those trying this out for the first time; Marc and Chiltern Blizzard (it'd be nice to see your namesake turn up in February... well, for some, at least!).

GFS went for -6*C across a fair part of NW Scotland overnight into 1st February.

The actual minimum, even across the higher-ground stations covered, was -1.5*C.

Never trust the GFS

Hmmn. Still no -5*C officially observed anywhere this month ... not much use for this competition

Maybe between the troughs this coming week, it will finally happen somewhere

...aaand there it is! -7.7*C at Altnaharra. The lowest temperature... of the entire winter

I'll look for any time I get to do the scores, perhaps this evening with a bit of luck

Not much been happening on here whilst I've been sunning in balmy Lanzarote.

Back to normal now though.

I was a mile off with my -5c guess and my lowest temp will struggle too at that rate!

I realise I should have gone with more than one threshold category to keep things alive in here - never mind, I'll do that for March

With only one set of scores, a simple table reveals everything we need to know at this stage:

Marc1
Chiltern Blizzard2
ARTzeman3
ozone_aurora4
springsunshine4
RobSnowman6
Caz7
Gooner8
Schmee8
Stormchaser10

I took a gamble with the first -5*C... and lost.

Funny how the top two are both new to the game - nice one you two

A quick look at where we're at with the two 'number of' categories:

Days officially managing over 10*C somewhere in the UK: 18

Days officially failing to reach 0*C somewhere in the UK: 2 (20th and 22nd, with the former not getting below 2.7*C!).

For the first of those, the closest currently is springsunshine who went for 16 days, and second closest is me, with 21 days.

For the second, Gooner and ozone_aurora went for 1 day while RobSnowman went for 3 - so you three are all joint-closest at this time.

As for the UK extremes, we've seen 13.7*C at one end - nothing special - and -7.7*C at the other end - again nothing remarkable whatsoever

With those figures, Gooner is closest for the high temp with 13.6*C and March is closest for the low temp with -7.5*C.

The February Prediction Game Chart

Here we are, the results for February 2014!

As you can see, Marc has made quite an entrance... shame not to see them in the March game, their performance this month was impressive!

It was a close fight at the top - well done springsunshine for achieving 3rd place this month.

For the first time I can recall, nobody had any late penalties

Many thanks to all entrants - it was a good turnout for February and March looks just as lively
