Well from a long-standing member of this forum, Darren (Retron) is a legend and I for one miss his analysis that he used to publish every morning.

He certainly doesn't deserve having mud flung at him. OK so he prefers cold weather, but he is counter-balanced nicely by Matty H (another legend on here).

The thing I continue to like about this place is the relative lack of bickering, and I hope Darren doesn't disappear from the forums.

Well looks like we've hit 18c in London prob go over 20c somewhere today. It was always likely with this set up not sure why Retron couldn't see it.

To say "it was always likely" is just plain stupid, it was not likely in the slightest and in fact none of the models showed it being this warm! You were just fortunate that the models went the wrong way on it. If you'd actually given reasons why you expected it to be warm (rather than a simplistic extrapolation of 850s) I may have given you more credit, but you didn't.

For those who are interested in why this has happened, it's because the models underestimated the warmth of the lower layers of the atmosphere. When I was having that argument with you the models were showing 850s of 8 or 9, thicknesses lower than they are now and lower dewpoints than we're experiencing. The chart which you based your over-simplistic prediction on was an outlier amongst the ensembles - there was one ECM run which showed the 10C 850 isotherm grazing the UK. All the other models showed 850s remaining lower and, with it, the whole lower level of the atmosphere was forecast to be colder. In the end 850s reached 13C over the SE this morning, which is a remarkably poor performance by the models.

It just goes to show that sometimes you end up with something several degrees warmer than any members of the ensemble suite (across all the models) show, and just a few days out at that. It's irritating to see people like you getting plaudits for what was (at the time) a hopelessly unlikely situation - but there you go.

And yes, those are sour grapes before anyone says it! Enjoy your warmth folks, I'm off to sulk.

PS - don't bother replying vince, I won't be reading it. In fact, I won't even be on here for a few days, I'm that fed up with it.

Fantastic day today. Sitting out in the garden in a T-shirt with a book and a cold bitter lemon for two hours -- who'd have imagined that in the second week of March? Maxed out here at 17.3 °C, unsurprisingly the warmest day of the year. Might be a while before it gets quite that warm again, but the week to come looks decent enough.

Maxed at 14.5C here, had some stubborn cloud that did shift to leave a mostly sunny afternoon but I think if it was sunny all day we would of got a bit higher in terms of temperature, still it was a better day than yesterday.

High temperatures reached northern England yesterday, I was in Huddersfield and the temperature reached 18.6c and I sat outside and had a pub lunch! Different at home in Penrith which was cloudy and just 11c..typical.

Today it's the other way round however, warm and sunny in penrith but cloudier further south.

The current satellite imagery looks more like the GFS cloud cover forecast than the Met Office (and Euro-4) one.

That could mean sunny spells lasting until later in the afternoon down here, which is a nice bonus as it was predicted on the morning BBC TV forecasts to be largely cloudy from around 10am.

Yep 16-18C along the south coast as been reached. Well I'm guessing 18C had been, it certainly feels warm enough and with 17.4C at 2pm @ Solent I think it's a fair guess.

With plenty if sunshine and northeast based winds over the next few days I think the 14&15's been forecasted for this region might just end up being somewhat under come the time.

Just up the road in Salisbury it has been reportedly cloudy since noon, and the satellite imagery supports this. Temperatures never got much above 12*C.

Here, it stayed sunny until 2pm, which allowed temperatures to climb into the mid-teens. Over the past 110 minutes, however, the temperature has dropped markedly to just below 10*C, and there's a bit of a damp chill in the air.

It's just starting to brighten up again now, with occasional blue sky visible. I'll most likely be waiting until at least tomorrow for another visit to the mid-teens, however.
