Remarkable difference in temperature this afternoon in East Sussex. 17c (63F) in warm sunshine at Hurst Green to just 7c (45f) in thick fog 15 miles away on the coast at Rye.

8.8C was the max here today, the fog finally cleared about half 1 this afternoon to leave very hazy sunshine but not out long enough to get us to double figures.

Dense fog yet again this morning... I haven't seen it this often since a spell in December 2007, I think it was.

It got down to freezing back home and hasn't risen much since... that must feel about as cold as it ever did last winter!

Here in Reading, it's really starting to brighten up and I am hopeful of seeing another rapid climb in temperatures leading to maximums in the mid-teens by the afternoon coupled with that gentle soupiness that comes with the moisture-laiden air.

I had this thread running for a week from the 7th to the 14th of March. Its currently 16c at Gravesend and I think that the last week can be for alot of people even up in Scotland be called a mild/warmish/warm spell which is what I originally wrote in the Op. Many of us have had some warm days and I think that Gravesend on one day even got over 20C and in many other places we saw temperatures in the high teens on some days despite the fact we've had very cool days too it has been the warmest spell of the year so far for many when the sun broke through. There can be no doubt that spring is here and even if we do end up getting some cooler weather thats normal for spring anyway so there's no going back to winter, its over. It was nondescript and boring so good riddance. If you get some snow its spring snow, winters over.

We're now in that part of the year where we begin to look for high temps and though as a community we have all kinds of people here including some that prefer cooler weather in the spring/summer/autumn months its time for the warmies once again. Living on the coast here in Torquay for many years I've become accustomed to 18/19/20c etc low twenties and its been so long since I've had to live with inland temperatures and the very high temperatures that can occur there, that it isn't something I desire any longer, though I always prefer mild/warm I like comfortable now, so this week has been great.

It was good to see so many people experience spring and the best part was that (depending on the day) it stretched from the south coast to the cities of Scotland. Its been a week of contrasts one day 16c+ the next day barely breaking 8c but so what, thats classic early spring, its nice to see something classic once again after an abnormal winter. Thanks to everyone that has reported temps over the last week.

so... that was the beginning, lets see what the rest of it serves up.

summer

Edit. Forgot to say today we made 12.7c, nothing great but we've had a few days this week that have been.

I reckon I've heard the 'bronzing!' remark put across many dozens of times over the past few days, nearly always with a strong flavour of sarcasm.

Anyway - made the mid-teens yet again today, felt nice overall but sitting outside in a t-shirt while working did prove to be a bit on the edge when some high cloud came along and turned the sun very hazy in the middle part of the day.

With any luck, this particularly fine weather will be followed by at worst changeable conditions that keep the garden fresh while still allowing temperature to rise to the mid-teens on most days, high teens at times - save the 'true' warmth (i.e. 20*C+) for late spring and summer, I say

Some local context for the recent and current warmth:

The maximums over the past 9 days have averaged at close to 15*C. That's pretty much halfway between the 1981-2010 max. temp. averages for April (13.1*C) and May (16.6*C), so arguably the current spell of weather is what we would typically expect in late April or early May, which is rather impressive - we're about a month and a half ahead of schedule in that respect!

The average maximum for the whole of March is only 0.16*C short of the LTA for April... again, impressive stuff.

Comparing with the average maximums since 2003 instead, April comes in at 14.4*C and may at 16.9*C, which raises the combined average by about 0.5*C, such that the current spell of weather ends up being more like mid-April based on the past decade alone.

Looking at the minimums, it's a whole different story, with the past 9 days averaging close to the LTA of 2.8*C, and the month as a whole actually 0.1*C below that value - this really reflects the mostly anticylonic and clear or foggy (still gets cold at night, tends to clear by 10-11am IMBY) nature of March's weather so far this year at my home location - which also applies for much of the UK.

The overall mean value is 7.8*C, and that's a little way beyond halfway between the March and April values, putting us level with what the LTA indicates we should expect in early April. Still not a bad achievement, and testiment to the notably high maximum average so far this month

It has just touched 20.0 C dead on here at my coastal location - and I think it is for real as the sensor is in a heavily shaded east-facing back yard. Also the 39% humidity mean that line washing are getting dry in the blink of an eye.
Bear in mind that this is being a day of excellent visibility with the sun shining away under totally clear blue sky (not even a haze), even this westerly breeze has some warmth to it. I suspect it's where the wind is blowing in from the west, from inland rather than in from the sea, that is making the difference.
Perhaps Steve "Gusty" will confirm or correct me with his own more reliable readings.
