Temperatures will widely fall below freezing, something which has been largelly absent this winter. Temps may drop below -5C in rural areas. Remarkable to think that this could easily be the coldest night of the extended winter.

Plus there are some very strong northern blocking signals emerging. Could april bring more snow than Dec,Jan,Feb combined? And does anyone know how unusual that would be?

I think one of the late 80's winters, possibly 1988 or 1989 brought April snow to my part of the world after a mild winter.

For the south of England I guess it would be unusual

It was -4.3C here on 12th March I guess we could come near that.
It's already down to 1.5C, a classsic clear + frigid spring evening after a wintry showers day.

Seeing -4*C predicted for my home location, with the odd run having managed a -5*C... that's totally bonkers considering that we've got above average soil temperatures at the moment

To put it into context, a night of -5*C or below has only occured once in all of the springs I've recorded... funnily enough, that was in 2006, and not 2013 as one might guess.

Very rare to get below freezing over the last few months and -2.7 being the rather pathetic winter low but maybe tonight will beat that as the temp has been dropping fast. Now down to 0.4c. Scraper will get an outing in the morning!

Got down to as low as 2.3 C at 5.45 am even here on the coastal edge, frost had no problems in setting in by the early hours since skies were clear and winds remained calm.

Certaintly looked like the coldest night of the 'winter' for many places. So here is a league table (montain sites are not included)

1) Resdale camp (northumberland 212m): -6.6C

2) Eskdalemuir (Cumbria 242m): -5.3C

3) Aviemore (E highlands 228m): -5.1C

3) Topcliffe (Yorkshire 87m): -5.1C

5) Leeming (Yorkshire 32m): -4.8C

5) Strathallan (Tayside 35m): -4.8C

7) Loch Glascarnoch (W highlands 264m): -4.7C

8) Dishforth (Yorkshire 36m): -4.4C

9) Benson (SE england 57m): -4.2C

Yorkshire was suprisingly cold, the vale of york perhaps the UKs pole of cold last night away from the unsuprising frost hollows of resdale and the infamous eskdalemuir. Apart from this temperatures dropped sub zero pretty much everywhere excepting: SE coast England, much of W devon and cornwall, W coast of wales, W coast of scotland, NE coast of scotland, N coast of scotland, and large parts of N ireland. Inland though, temperatures of -2C or -3C were the norm.

Also Ice day watch for the vale of york and central scotland, if the fog doesnt clear. Still -3C in dishforth. Now, does anyone know how unusual a late march night is, that eclipses the whole of dec-feb?
