I have noticed that there are quite often big differences between temperatures measured at home and compared with reporting locations nearby

But on other days the temperatures match closely - which is odd

Does anyone else find this

Nearby locations have current temperature at 22c at 1pm

I now have a reading of 25.4c

Could be many reasons - where different weather stations are located, some people may have theirs in a sheltered concrete back yard and when it's completely dull there won't be a massive difference between another on grass - but once the sun comes out concrete heats up and even if the weather station is in the shade the "urban heat effect" begins to work and gives a much higher reading for the weather station that is on..........or near concrete. Some people may have a massive garden with complete grass cover so their readings should be lower in the sunshine, they could have their weather station 50 feet away from the brick house/concrete floor.

Grass does not heat up like concrete and brick, that's just 1 reason snow melts quicker on pavements than on grass. Countryside areas are generally cooler than urban areas because they are more grassy and have less concrete and brick.

It could also be the type of weather station.  I have a VP2 and a Vantage Vue in roughly thre same position and the Vue nearly always records a higher max. , probabnly due to smaller shields.  In summer, the stations are shaded for much of the morning, by a Canadian Maple tree but by afternoon they are in full sun, when it shines.  Compared to nearby Kenley Airfield( approx. 1.25 miles miles away) which is an official station, the temps I record am are often lower but by pm higher, due presumably, to exposure to direct sunlight.

thanks

It looks like even if you have correct screening in a built up urban area you are likely to have higher temperature readings than for an official reporting station in that area due to the concrete effect

Lots of variables and each location of your sensor will have its own micro climate for that area
