I see brazil are (forlornly) appealing silva's yellow card. This cannot succeed. either they are trying to create a siege mentality or they want to get their excuses in early - 'we lost because fifa didnt want us to win'

I have a cousin who is now 44 and can remember every World Cup since '78 (he went to Italia 90), and in his view the best one was Spain 1982. Loads of high-scoring games and full of drama; who can forget Italy v Brazil and the W Germany v France semi-final, apart from, that is, what Schumacher did to Battiston.

The knockouts have need that drink in order for me to tolerate them though. Dire.

I certainly have a rose-tinted view of the WCs of the 70s and early 80s, but I think a big part of that was the novelty of gorging on so many live games on TV in such a short space of time. Lest we forget, the only live games you could see regularly on TV back then would be the FA Cup Final.

One thing is certain - if Brazil win the World Cup and it is a big IF they will be by far the worst team to win the World Cup - never mind the reputation - on tournament showing - definitely in the top 3 worst teams

It's all about results and not the performance - brazil 1982 were a really great team and they got knocked out in their final group game vs Italy

It's results that count and not show

Most of the reports that I have seen say that Germany will definitely beat Brazil tomorrow, and the jury is out on the other semi - probably a slight bias towards favouring Argentina

So if you look at the final options in order from most to least likely you can say

1 Germany v Argentina

2 Germany v Holland

3 Brazil v Argentina

4 Brazil v Holland

Virtually no-one gave Italy any chance of beating Brazil in 1982 to stay in that World Cup given the Italians dull start to that tournament, and look at what happened.

The bottom line is never write-off the underdog.

Does anyone know why England never get it right ?

4 years ago thrashed by the Germans in round 2 - everyone saying Capello out and that his authoritarian approach did not help the team and that we need English manager

And end up with Woy and do worse than last time

Whatever next ?

Each time we go out of the World Cup we look for improvements for next time - and 'next time' is always the same as the previous time

anyone fed up with the referee's indicating a min of x mins added time and then blowing up exactly on that number, irrespective of what happens after they notify of the extra minutes to be played?

my theory is that these officials are tulipscared of making a bad call and its not in their interest to keep playing any longer than  they absolutely have to. a significant error and their chances of a high profile game in the future are gone.

In response to Nickl (although not directly to his query), there was an interesting insight on 5 Live earlier. Refs have been specifically instructed in this tournament to keep their cards in their pockets for as long as possible. The days of protecting the star players have been buried. My view? Why does it have to be one or the other. What ever happened to refereeing a game according to the rules of the game? The answer to that can largely be found in the billion replays from every conceivable angle of every incident and then subsequent cross-examination to fecking death of it all afterward by the likes of boring Mark Lawrenson.

Germany to me almost have that feel of a rival derby team that you want to get hammered every time.

Plus I work with a German and he is a smug little fecker when it comes to international football.
