Lightning and rumbles of thunder here again. This just popped up from nowhere it seems because there was nothing heading this way on the lightning map. Oooh that one was closer so it's moving this way. I was just settling down to sleep as well. Not now though.

Still a fair bit of thunder and lightning nearby here, looks like Great Yarmouth area was in the most active part of the storm.

Surprised nothing is coming up on the lightning radar round here because it's quite frequent.

Strikes in my area are now showing on the lightning map so this must be home grown.

Just like last night seeing the flashes from the Sheffield cell, all the way across the Pennines here in SE Manchester. Sadly not enough energy for a repeat of last night though.

The chance of thunderstorms continues today, chiefly for eastern areas, in response to daytime heating. Showers should die away by dusk.

The Met Office highlights the risk of torrential downpours, gusty winds and large hail.

The 0Z GFS suggests there could be in excess of 1000J/kg of CAPE and LI of -4 in places early this evening: http://modeles.meteociel.fr/modeles/gfs/runs/2014072000/gfs-11-18.png?0

Apart from some very distant flickering from storms over Bedfordshire on Thursday night, and two rumbles from a feeble cell that passed by to my east on Friday morning, this much discussed stormy spell has yet to deliver something of real interest IMBY. South Cambs must be one of the worst locations in the world for interesting weather.

It sounds like Kent is the place to be tonight and I wish I were there on our fave campsite in Kingsdown.  We'd discussed and dismissed having this weekend there but if we had, I'd have missed this afternoon's storm here and that would have been a sin.  Enjoy the light show down there and fingers crossed for more in the East Midlands!!

It seems that humid, sultry air remains firmly in place today, with the dewpoint here at 17*C and the air temperature 23*C.

In sunny spells, there remains the feeling of being pressure cooked.

The high moisture content in the air is also in evidence; a bottle of cold water becomes dripping wet on the outside within the space of half an hour!

There's a lot of cumulus about at the moment, and some cumulus congestus, but nothing really kicking off at this time. Interesting that there's a surface flow from the NW but an upper flow from the SE - how's that for directional wind shear?

For the last twenty minutes, there has been continuous distant thunder to the east of here. And I mean continuous!

Some rumbles from the south east as well.

I think the storms in EA/Kent are feeding/persisting in a more favourable sheared environment, hence they have rapidly grown into T-storms and are longer lived. Those further north are more pulse-type cells in a less favourable environment, so they are generating/fading quite quickly without becoming persistent lightning producers.
