Seemed to me like much of that opening ceremony was designed by a committee of suits sitting in London, brainstorming their best Scottish cliches. So we get Nessy, heather, kilts, shortbread and teacakes. Interesting to see if our Scottish members felt at all patronised by it... I suppose the McBarrowman gay kiss was somewhat controversial, given that homosexuality is illegal in many of the nations that are taking part.

Still from a cringeworthy perspective in hindsight it is probably better to be excluded! I'm hoping the sport will be better. ๐Ÿ˜ From a personal perspective it is nice to know that one of the pupils I taught 2 years ago is competing in the Games.

Hi, Arcus.

Yup, thought it was really embarrassing, but what can you expect when Labour controlled Glasgow City Council had a hand, or should I say a manky paw, in making it. So typical of how Labour in Scotland view this country.

The one good thing about the Commonwealth Games is that the English get to hear the proper national anthem.

A disappointing set of replies, but perhaps not surprising to find on a website where the 'Events' forecast is apparently unaware of the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup, or even Wickerman!

As an Englishman who was fortunate enough to buy tickets for the Opening Ceremony, I'm pleased to be able to assure you that it was the most spectacular event I've ever had the good fortune to attend.  The venue was amazing and 100% full, whilst the noise from the 40k crowd just can't be described.  The choice of music etc. might not all to have been everybody's choice, but it was varied and there was a good mixture.  I particularly liked the Amy MacDonald/Rod Stewart piece, and also the Calvin Harris/Andy Stewart arrangement was brilliant.  Only downside was that the Red Arrows flew straight over the main stand roof so nobody saw them!

With regard to any effect on the referendum vote;  I'm told that the Yes vote crept further up, and more important continues to rise steadily every time Linneker says anything on TV.

Regarding the ability of the Scots to organise, well you had to be there to see it.  No delays on getting in through airport standard security, helpful stewards all over the place, reasonably priced food and drink, and the biggest fleet of bought in buses for Park & Ride that you could imagine.  Went in on one from Morecambe and out on one borrowed from Wales.  Was driving away from P&R 30 minutes after end of show.

Here in Leeds everybody at work talking about yesterdays results, and there's lots of interest.

I'm putting the generally cretinuous tone of comments down to the usual Glasgow/Edinburgh/Aberdeen rivalry and the opinion of many southrons that if it ain't in London it ain't no good.

Having said that I fully support the Games and will be there next week and can't wait. (They could still have acknowledged Aberdeen's existence in their "tour of Scotland" though).

As far as the sport is concerned, the home team are putting in a very good showing so far and were still third in the medal table the last time I looked. Nice to see an Aberdonian (Neil Fachie) just getting a gold for Scotland in the tandem cycling with Craig MacLean piloting.
