We have at least another 2 hours of potential warming down here 😉 I think (officially) 30.5C has a fair chance unless something drastic happens to the weather between now and 5.30pm.

Solent MRSC has reached 29.0C

Here is a comparison of July 2013 and 2014 showing the highest temperature by day in the UK in a sequence of days where at least 25C was reached somewhere in the UK. Although 2013 was overall a longer and warmer spell of weather this year is not too far behind.

26.6C as a high here today and the hottest of the spell - certainly not a remarkable heatwave here in Oldham, last July I recorded a hotter temp @ 28.4C.

To put last July into context I recorded a temp at or above 20C for 17 consecutive days. So far this July it's been 11. Still overall it's been a great Summer so far.

This summer has been a very useful way of putting 2013 in context. It's clear July 2013 was miles better, warmer, drier than 2014, and it was in danger if being rather prematurely forgotten, like July 1994.

Yet despite all that this year we seem to be feeling it more. I think the secret is that for a summer to be remembered well, it has to have at least two very good months. We've had June and July, but also a very usable mid and late spring. Despite a lack if anything exceptional it's felt like a good summer.

2013 suffers in the same way as 1999 (July), 1997 (Aug), 1996 (June), 2010 (June), and 2009 (August) in being a single very good month surrounded by crap. The opposite in every way would be 1989, pretty good from May to September and still at the top of my summer index leaderboard for the extended summer season. This year could have a chance of emulating a bit of 1989.

Still 22C at 12:30am!!

Had plenty of nights over the past 10 days or so where temperatures are similar to this at this time, even warmer on some nights! This is something the heatwave of July 2013 lacked, in fact I think we need to go back 2006 or earlier to find a heatwave with so many hot nights...

From the night of the 12 until last night, we have had 13 days with nights no lower then 17C, several of those have hovered around the 20C mark. Quite extraordinary even for us, and we're used to warm summer nights down here.

Last night was very balmy and still 25c at 10pm and 22c at midnight, then we had a shower at 1am.  It's been a few degrees cooler today and much more comfortable for working in the garden this afternoon.

I'll remember last summer as a good one with a few 30c+ days, though it had cooled down by the end of July and August was much cooler and wetter.  Spring 2013 was very late and followed a lot of snow even into April

This year we had a very warm Spring and Summer arrived early.  We haven't had much in the way of 30c + days but we've had more days in the high 20's this summer and I'd put it a touch better than last year.  We'll see what August brings.
