How's this for a localised thing? Right now as I type this, Hythe and Sandgate (3 to 6 miles away to my west) are experiencing flash flooding and thunder thanks to a localised slow moving heavy shower - yet here at the Harbour end at Folkestone all I got to see was about ten minutes of spitty rain blowing about in the brisk wind, and now the sun is trying to come out again.
Does look dark and threatening to my west - like it has been so for the past hour.

EDIT: It is now raining moderately.

However, Prince Harry had left the building by the time it did start to rain anyway.
It's where I felt that what with rising pressure, an upper warm air inversion to "cap" convection and CAPE values not really being that high, we were going to get away with it today and it was all said in high confidence. But, I will put my hand up and say I've got it wrong - and I have mentioned that in my Cloud Master page.

Plenty of action to come this week before it turns decidedly horrible on Friday.

Tomorrow heavy showers across western and central areas from the north Midlands northwards by early evening

Then some very heavy bursts of rain across southern counties tomorrow night and also Northern Ireland

Later western Scotland also look like getting a battering during Wednesday morning.

A decent day likely on Thursday before it all goes downhill on Friday.

Of course, it isn't the first time a lively Altlantic system is about to attack our shores at this time of the year - as this event between 11th to 15th August 1979 proves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Fastnet_race - that was 35 years ago.

And that wasn't even an ex-tropical system, but as a vigourous Altantic storm in its own right.

Heard a loud rumble here at 20.25 hours (6.8.14) as the storm suddenly developed, and saw a few flashes of lightnings as it drifted out over the sea at dusk, including what looked like 2 positive strikes (very bright, too). The storm later died out.

A large storm moved close by to the west of here, the thunder from that was constant for a time around 1.30pm BST and seemed to be all intra-cloud top activity, a few spit spots from the anvil edge from that. A smaller cell electrified more or less overhead around 2pm - again the activity was intra-cloud; a brief downpour from that. Sunny skies have now moved in from the south. Temperatures dropped 5C  from 22 to 17C
