For the UK for 1st-30th September 2014 and going by the official Met Office station reports what/when will be:

- The latest 25.0*C              - The first night falling to or below 0*C somewhere in the SE or SW regions?

- The longest run of days not reaching 20*C anywhere in the UK?

- The highest UK temperature?              - The lowest UK temperature?

- The rainfall as a percentage of the long term average?              - The sunshine as a percentage of the LTA?

After many months searching for heat, how about searching for a lack of it in September? Surely there are few better ways to encourage a month to rival 2006

Just looking at the sub title of this thread - Mellow warmth - almost a quote from Keats.

I call it the mellow month of purple bird poo!  Though this year maybe that's befitting of August because the blackberries and elderberries are ripe early here and true to form, my car is has been bombed with purple bird poo!!

Even nature is being fooled by the weather's antics

Today was a typically 'difficult' day down on the South Coast for the Bournemouth Air Festival. There was a lot of cloud in the afternoon and light levels were often so low that it was hard to make out any detail on the planes!

I was unexpectedly away from internet access yesterday so guess what, I'm late for my own game

Funny to be handing myself a one point penalty. All the more reason to score well this month

The majority vote by far this month is for a warmer, drier and sunnier than average September.

Let's hope we're on the right side of the fence this time

You see, my theory is that we are influenced by the weather we're experiencing at the time we make our predictions.  We have such short memories with weather and forget just how quickly it can change, so we go with what we've currently got.

Well, I do hope we're right with the weather for this month.  August was pretty miserable and caught a lot of us out.

Not a lot to discuss so far this month, with gentle but persistent warmth not very exciting and a total lack of rain, while impressive, also not very interesting in a year that's seen more than enough rain to see the wildlife through a few weeks of dry weather.

As things stand, the latest 25*C looks like it could be on Sunday 21st, though GFS has teased a chance of 25*C right at the end of the month on some runs too, just to keep us on our toes.

The remaining two months of autumn may prove more active if recent CFS outlooks verify to some extent, as they show anomalously low heights across the UK, implying a lot of storms to track across our lands.

Thanks SC.  So far it's been quite a strange month here.  A lot of misty mornings, sometimes taking a while to clear and the sun never quite making it but it's been mild.  Then we've had the clearer sunny and warmer days and cool nights.  We've had one day when we had a bit of rain but otherwise it's been dry apart from very heavy dew.

Have we actually had any days this month that have failed to reach 20c?

The lowest UK maximum temperature so far this month stands at an impressive 22.5*C - so it has felt like summer in at least one location on each and every day of the first half of September 2014

It has actually felt more like summer than the last three weeks of August did.  At least it's mild with no chilly wind.

Hopefully tomorrow will make up for that and be 2*C above - which would bring me 27*C

Speaking of higher temperatures, yesterday finally hit 25*C somewhere in the UK this month, with Wiggonholt managing 25.3*C

Now we just have to wait and see how many more occur this month and, more importantly, how late the final one is. The GFS 12z op run today shows the possibility of it being on the final day of the month   - can't say I'd mind though
