REPORT 

September was a very strange month overall. It was warmer than average but not seriously so here. Temperatures though always on the warm side of average by day never really got to anything exceptionally high but the longevity of the fine weather through the month made for a very pleasant feel to things. There were some chilly nights and the first Autumn fogs arrived too through the month totalling 14.5hrs of the early mornings. Patchy grass frost was recorded on the morning of the 22nd. Sunshine was somewhat above average reflective of High pressure based weather pattern. It was a drier than average month too with one notable excepton of the 18th when the months only active thunderstorm delivered nearly 20mm of rain in a few hours and there was some strong lightning accompanying this storm too but leaving this aside it was an exceptionally dry month. Winds were very light and I actually recorded a completely calm day in the sheltered location I now live in on the 29th. There was no other unusual weather phenomenon experienced through the period.

Conditions at my location, compared with data from my series 2003-2014, with anomalies compared to 1981-2011 LTA in square brackets:

Avg. Max of 21.12 [+ 2.52] is third warmest behind 2005 (21.93) and 2006 (22.1).

Avg. Min of 11.43 [+1.43] is third warmest behind 2011 (11.74) and 2006 (14.27).

Avg. 24h of 16.27 [+1.97] is second warmest behind 2006 (18.18).

2005 saw a below average mean minimum temperature (9.6 compared to LTA of 10.0) which held the mean back at 15.77. Clearly September 2014 saw an abundance of mild nights, though some chilly ones did occur two, with 22nd, 23rd and 25th all seeing minimums close to 5*C.

Precipitation in mm:

Total rain of 4.2 [-60.3] is driest in series, ahead of 2011 (24.9) and 2010 (26.7).

Curiously, of the 12 Septembers recorded, 8 of them are drier than average, 5 of them with deficits of more than 20 mm.

The phrase "what has happened to our Septembers these days?" which I read the other day seems to be an accurate observation!

Sunshine in hours:

Total sun of 185.4 [+34.2] is the sunniest in my series, ahead of 2012 (184.6) and 2011 (172.8).

This is interesting given that there were some notably dull runs of days in the mix. Overall though, a lot of days had lengthy sunny spells, which added up to the fairly high total this month. It continues a long-term trend across all months toward higher sunshine totals, perhaps a benefit from improved air quality relative to a decade ago - though we all know how rubbish the air still was during some of those spells with winds from Europe!

Anyway, September's below.  Another very dry month.  Think we will be back to normal this month, been a few wet days so far with more to come.
