New Kent County Council policies have been introduced here, whereby many residential roads now have all their street lights switched off at night.

With the clocks going back last weekend, this has resulted in my road being plunged into a big black hole, well before it's even turned midnight! 

It's gonna be a right royal sod to look for that tell-tale solitary snowflake now 

Anyone else affected? 

I have spend hours looking at the lamp-post in our street and it has never, ever turned into a snowflake ... 

The street lights have been switched off at midnight here for the last two years. 

Actually it's been a lot longer than that. They go off before midnight despite what that says

Would like my street light to turn off at night. Less light pollution.. More stars to see with telescope or spotting scope..

In Macclesfield street lights are  switched off from midnight, but on the main roads between towns (in the Cheshire East council area) street lighting is switched off permanently, with a view to removal of the street lights in the future.

Not sure about Stockport Council policy, must have a look on their website.

When I was a kid, the street lamps always went off around midnight, but now they're on all night long.  As much as I like lamp post watching for snow, I really wouldn't mind if they turned our lights off at midnight again.

Besides, one can always shine a torch to get the same effect.

West Sussex 'consulting' on whether to turn off its street lights at Midnight. At the risk of straying into UIA territory, this is the latest trend in council economies, which Eric Pickles will notice and have a go at councils for in a year or so

This is an outrage! It is discriminatory against weather geeks/ lamp post watchers.  Lobby the council with all weapons!!

This.  Mind you, your neighbours may wonder why you are shining a torch out from a window...

I'm also wondering whether those new LED lights, the ones that gives off a sharper whiter light, are better at picking out snowflakes? There are already a few of those around here at Folkestone.
  Anyway, it is a bit of a moot point as far as my own street is concerned as half the roadside lamps doesn't even work properly (some are originals from when the street was first constructed in the 1950's).

I've got the mother of all LED lamp posts out side my flat to capture any snowfall beautifully, in fact I've got two.

Gas? Luxury. We just had to rub two damp sticks together all night long until they glowed a dull red colour. If we were lucky.

Ahh - lampost watching.  Ive spent many a winter night apearing to be a peeping tom, watching lamposts.  in the slight chance i might see a snowflake.

Came to a horrible point a few years back when the light outside my house couldnt get any further than red/amber, so couldnt give any decent light.  Ended up putting my security light on in the backgarden...every 15 minutes (it turns itself off after 5 mins) This came after the horrible 90's period of hardly any proper snowfall.

I will be HOWEVER I have two security lights front and back that I could switch on  ....I shall not be defeated 

I sometimes wish my security lights had an option to keep them on for as long as I like, rather than auto turning off after a minute or two.

It's like watching the start of a TV show you've been waiting months for, and then the TV turns itself off as soon as the opening credits finish!

You need either ones where you can turn the sensor off, or ones where you can adjust how long they stay on for...or simply buy one that's not got a sensor and you can just leave it on using a timer 

However, I've still yet to see if it does pick out snowflakes as we haven't had any snow since I fitted that to my lights in the Summer of 2013.

My sensor light stays on all night. Like it that way. Ordinary 60 watt bulb that people do not use so much.. Still available online .. Many moths have been seen by it..
