A lot of convective precipitation moving into Dorset and Hampshire at the moment, entirely missed by the models and TV forecasts.

It's really throwing it down here and may continue to do so frequently for at least an hour.

Perhaps the models aren't sufficiently handling the impact of anomalously high SSTs and the general increase in atmospheric moisture associated with what is on course to be the warmest year on record for the globe as a whole.

This idea has developed since I became aware during my dissertation project that it can only take a very slight increase in moisture and/or air temperature (the latter only if moisture is sufficient) to allow convection to initiate where it would otherwise have been suppressed.

Present total 18.3mm.

already 32 mm here following a lot of heavy showers yesterday and more overnite with thunder . as u say the warm channel promotes convection at this time of year these situations often underplayed by forecasters but can produce a lot of rain . indeed october produced over 5 inches here a lot of it from this source 

At this end, it's got to a point where I'm now surprised if I could actually get through a whole day without seeing any rain as another 9.0 mm has fallen since midnight (and is still raining). The Folkestone Rain Deflector is well and truly broken as I've already recorded over 40 mm so far this month - and it's only the 5th day!

Another 11.7 mm has fallen so far today, thus bringing this month's total to 54.5 mm - and it is only the first week of November!

How could it go from being the driest September in years to an already very wet November at a drop of the hat?! Never will I complain about the lack of variety in our weather, but I hope this doesn't set the scene for the rest of this Autumn and into Winter proper!

The frontal boundary produced many bursts of intense rainfall here too, but local stations are only reporting 6 mm (Boscombe Down) and 9 mm (Hurn) for midnight to noon. Admittedly the rain probably sounded worse than it was due to strong, squally winds.

A little over 7 mm here so far today brings the monthly total to 41.8 mm. This is a very soggy start to November and follows my third wettest October in my series going back to 2003 (111.8 mm in 2014, behind 133.6 mm in 2013 and 146 mm in 2012... yep, the top three are all neighbours!)

Needless to say, ground water levels are very high, and river levels are on the up. Thank goodness we had that very dry September!

Just watched the MetO 5-dayer on BBC News Channel. Looks as if the South Coast could easily pick up another 20mm by midweek, and no sign of settled weather beyond that.

Certainly plenty of wet weather in the offing for many over the coming days. Recorded 26.5mm from today's system .. total now at 35.4mm for the month so far

The LTA for the whole month is 73.2 mm.

Still a long way to go to hit the 243 mm total of 2009, but we're not far off the right pace...!
