I live within 15 miles of that coast - I guess I'm extreme (in the context of the subject we're discussing).  I wonder whether the South Downs might provide just enough height?

The problem I have with it is that when you zoom in on the map you see a mix of placenames and circles which ought indict where the places so named are but dont in fact appear to, so it can still be difficult to see if your town is within the warning area or not.

Met Office written forecast for this region, along with the maps, don't paint a snowy scene at all up to the end of the weekend. Huge contrast to the GFSP and some other NWP

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Specifics are very much to be formed up on, as is always the case with snow situations. Get the cold in place and the rest will follow.

Lunchtime forecast was a cold one, as expected.

Showed up to Sunday.

Rain overnight tonight with the strong winds

Tomorrow rain moves away as we get into a showery NWly flow.

Friday showed a couple of troughs running down the UK , was mentioned that as each one passes through it brings colder and colder air with it. Showed wintry ppn across some parts.

Saturday it done its best to show something moving across S Wales and S Midlands the graphics fluctuated between rain and snow.

Sunday showed LP to the East wit snow on some Eastern areas

Met Office update: - Note that snow and cold wasn't mentioned once! Still vague with low confidence ..."perhaps" - "could be" or "Risk!" - Time will tell hopefully there will be some snow here next week then. This is all we need one day or sleet or wet snow...just one.

UK Outlook for Thursday 29 Jan 2015 to Thursday 12 Feb 2015:

The current signal is for the end of January and early part of February to perhaps see something of a change from rather unsettled conditions to more in the way of drier, settled weather, at least for a time. Southern areas, in particular, may experience some lengthier dry spells, although temperatures could remain below normal into the early part of February. This brings a risk of night-time frosts and, with showers still likely for some, these could take on a wintry flavour, particularly over hills. Towards the middle of February there are signs of more unsettled conditions returning, especially across the north.

Haha Classic blooper and fraudulent slip by Helen Willetts just now in the BBC weather forecast" She said something like  - "It looks like we will be in a cold spell of weather now for a couple of years!"

Did anyone pick on this?

Seriously if she meant 'a couple of weeks' that is a huge turnaround from the MetO via the broadcast media. The only negative thing should we see snowfall next week is Madden and his cronies will be sharpening their pencils and I find the mere thought of it nauseating.
