New Year 1995 brought an Arctic blast. I remember snow here New Year's Eve 1994 clearing in the afternoon for a bitterly cold frosty midnight. Snow showers drifted in from the Irish Sea during New Year's morning.

It was start for me, of one the most memorable years for weather. 20 years ago now.

While that had brought some snow with even a spell of "blizzard conditions" to my area on New Year's Day, very little further snow was observed for the rest of that winter.
  So it looks like this snow event was pretty much a one-off "blink and you'd miss it" affair during what was a very average winter on the whole.

You were lucky Kevin, it was a non-event here. Winter 1994/95 although classed as Very Mild brought some notable snowfalls to the NW, one later in January and a very snowy spell of cold zonality in early March.

The summer was superb and the following December was very cold so yes I agree not a bad year and so much better than anything between 2011 - 2014.

My favourite year. Winter 94-5 was remarkably sunny I recall as well as being very wet.

March and April were unusually dry and some places went around 5 weeks with no rain.

We had a very pleasant early heatwave in May followed by weeks of Northwesterlies with showers culminating in a first half of June as chilly as I can remember. Then just when we were ready to call the end of summer along came a memorable 2 week heatwave peaking at Barbourne on the 30th which kick started the legendary hot and dry summer.

Hugely wet September especially in Eastern Scotland, then a record warm October with a lovely Indian summer heatwave, a pretty warm but nondescript November followed by record cold in December and those news pictures of snowdrifts in the Northern Isles on Christmas Day.

Not only my favourite year for weather but a top year for so many other reasons too.

i certainly remember new year 1985 being the start of a very cold spell

It was my favourite year and remember how swollen the river here which was interesting to watch almost dried up by early September which I know a stone next to the stepping round concrete stones almost a appeared dried out only at the bottom part stay in the water, that I monitor the levels and became difficult to see it later when it all became black water and smell badly.  

Followed by a drier winter of 95/96 which the river levels went below September 1995 levels by May was scuppered as Epsom and Ewell council decided to pump fresh water to prevent it from drying up again.  Stupidly they left it running water during last winter which had flooded the school's basement next to it and part of the main road in Ewell under water for 2 months.  Don't know why they don't turn it off to relieve some pressure from flooding.  I was told that in 1990 was completely dried up but I didn't see it as i was living in Cyprus.  

Parched landscape was the most striking beauty after a very muddy landscape in the winter and on the Last of the Summer Wine programs when Yorkshire dales was also parched so stunning to look at than watching the men acting.
