This is a poor image but I've lost my links to WV imagery
It is the water vapour image for 18Z. A useful tool in determining the degree of cyclogenesis, as warm dry air is often wrapped into the baroclinic leaf. It's this air that accelerates down towards the surface and in could precipitate a sting jet.


You can see a dry air incursion in the image as the darker hole to the W of Scotland.

Question for the experts... on the fax charts there are two cold fronts shown in close succession one after the other. What causes this "double cold front" effect?

Good question! Sometimes I think it could be a split cold front where the upper part runs ahead of the lower part... but I'm not sure to be honest.

Here's a better image of the WV at 18Z (courtesy Jo Farrow NW)



A very clear dry intrusion and latest IR pass shows cloud tops streaming in to the core in a 'crabclaw' shape indicative of sting jet territory.
Ship W of Western Isles reports 16mb fall in last 3 hours. That's impressive.
An upgrade to RED for NE Scotland and Islands probable.

I see that all schools in the Western Isles and Orkney have been closed tomorrow (wisely IMO)

I don't think the meto will go red seeing as the worst winds are overnight when people are asleep. I wish I was going to be here for the rest of the week, the snow build up on the hills should be good to see.

A mature extratropcial cyclone just NE of Scotland features all characteristics of a well developed warm seclusion. The occlusion continues to wrap around its center with a potential sting jet in full progress along its S/SE-ern fringe. Latest forecast soundings place 95 kt winds just shy above sea level in a well mixed air mass, so expect similar gusts over N/NE Scotland during the start of this forecast. This will be a life-threatening and very dangerous situation! Be aware of the fact that our level scheme does not capture non-convective wind gusts.
Later on this depression fills rapidly during its SE-ward motion and the gradient flow weakens. Still very strong winds spread SE-wards towards Denmark, N/CNTRL Germany and Poland. The trough approaches the Ukraine during the end of the forecast.

Thanks for that forecast...I think. I really do not like the sound of that. The wind, while not exceptional at the moment, is beginning to pick up here.

Thunder, lightning and the wind is ferocious at the moment on Skye. Lights are flickering too so not sure how much longer the power will hold out. Getting worse by the second.

Dublin airport shut because of high winds gusts already 110kph there apparently. Maybe storm is further south than predicted.

Wind picking up now - you can feel it slamming into the side of the house - windows flexing and the glass distorting as the pressure builds on them. It's not so much the wind as the debris it sends flying - I once found an eighteen inch roof tile buried six inches vertically in the grass - it would be like being hit by a mobile guillotine blade. Hence all schools and colleges shut tomorrow. Ferries are cancelled, flights under review - and we all remember the cargo ship which was sunk by the storm on the 2nd of January just a few miles away. Nobody survived.

My God! i have been outside the past 20mins, my garage is up the side of my house so is sheltered so i was standing in there, then was up the back garden having a look about, trampolines, tables,chairs everywhere! This is up there with the famous "Hurricane Bawbag" episode of a few years ago!!

Wrt double cold front, someone mentioned it approaching Glasgow an hour ago. We had what i presume was the first front coming through at back of nine, rain was bouncing well over a foot off the ground, so this other one must be second, wind kicked in about quarter to twelve here and is wild (we in yellow zone) lights on and off constantly. It must be mental further north and west. Enjoy!
