G'day everybody.

long time since I have posted on here and a long time since I first posted on this forum back in 2002 under the name 1987 hurricane. So after 8 years of living in Perth, Western Australia I am not planning to move back to old blighty anytime soon. So what's going on with the weather here? Well funnily enough it's Summer in Australia and therefore it's hot. This morning was particularly scorchio though with the walk to work at 8am under a blazing Sun at 32c. We peaked at 39.3c at 11am before the trough moved inland and the sea breeze moved in. Further inland about 40km North East of Perth, Pearce airforce base hit 43.3c with a dp of -3c. Rather hot and dry indeed. We have had a few bushfires today and one near a town called Toodyay burnt through 140 hectares and destroyed 2 buildings. New Years eve should be a much more pleasant 30c high and cooler still on New Years day. Happy new year and more posts from sunny Aus in 2015.

Sure brings back memories for me reading this. 24 years now since I was living in Perth. I still miss it. I remember days like you've just described.

Look forward to more reports which will be more interesting than the zonal crap being dished up here.

If I can't have snow I want it warm and sunny, the British climate seems to bring little of either.

Thanks for posting - it is always interesting to hear what's happening in the wider world, especially when as Andy says sod all is going on here (from a winter and local perspective I should add although I think I'm fairly safe from my loathing of Imbyism in this thread LOL)

I think we have another member who lives in Perth but can't remember his name

G'day folks. Well it's the height of Summer here in Perth and its hot as you would imagine. It's especially hot when your air conditioning breaks down. Tonight we are expecting a low of 24c, and at 9.30pm we are still hovering around 30c. Tomorrow we are expected to hit 41c. So sleep tonight is going to be a struggle 😉. The weak sea breeze has fizzled here at the moment and the easterly is about to arrive, so I would not be surprised to see temperatures rise a little towards midnight. The easterly will feed the intense heat in from the interior. Tomorrows heat may trigger an afternoon thunderstorm. Temperatures to the North and East are expected to hit around 43-47c so a huge amount of heat to fuel any storms. Fingers crossed there are no bushfires tomorrow. The Lightning threat is a concern.

Well last Monday turned into an absolute scorcher with Perth hitting 44.4c. The 6th hottest day recorded in the city. I happened to be outside when it was that temperature in work trousers and shirt and it was rather scorchio to say the least. Since then everyday has been clear blue skies and sunshine with temperatures around 31-36c. Pretty standard for January in Perth. This morning was a shock though waking upto fog. The trough had just moved inland and allowed some moist air in from the West off the Indian Ocean. The moisture, lack of wind and a little smoke was enough to cause fog with visibility down to 150m, almost unheard of here in Perth during the Summer.

Very interesting read for me Perthite1 !!

I worked in Perth around the turn of the century (lived in Scarborough and worked in Booragoon south of river) and remember having the air con on while driving to work at 8am. It was a beautiful drive though with the Indian ocean beaches on my right hand side the whole way!

I specifically remember going out to The Vines resort to watch the European golf tournament and it being around 43C, that was one tough day to be a spectator!

It's a lovely city, growing very quickly from what I hear (Joondalup was the northern most suburb back then I believe), and I've certainly enjoyed some good Christmasses over the years, but the one thing I missed was variation in the weather. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the climate there.

All the best,

Mark

As others have said, very interesting to hear from you. Your weather is so different to what we're experiencing here.

What's the drought situation like with you at the moment? AFAIK, you've had it dry for a few years now. Obviously, it's hot and dry at the moment, but did the drought break last winter?

Great to hear people find the weather over here interesting. Yes, Lionel and Mark there has been a significant drying of the climate here over the past 30 years or so. We now have 2 desalination plants which of course are not environmentally good. However, they are needed. The Main dams feeding Perth averaging around 30% capacity at the end of the Winter wet season, and dipping back to 20% by the end of Summer. The main aquifer feeding the city has dropped around 8m, not just through climate drying, but urban sprawl and bore water use. Significant issues faced in this regard.
I have to say I love the Perth summer climate, which is endless weeks of clear skies. Occasionally a trough will be deep enough down the west coast to form thunderstorms. Often these don't produce much rain, but lots of lightning and these events are spectacular. Cannot beat an evening at Cottesloe watching a distant storm rage over the Ocean on a hot, humid night.
It's the Winters where there has been significant reduction of rainfall. The last 2 Winters have been only just below average, but that's been the exception to the rule. A reason for this is the exceptionally high sea surface temperatures have resulted in huge tropical moisture events ahead of cold fronts. The jet stream is further South than it was in the 1970s and beforehand. Though interestingly some research recently has said that this might have been an unusually wet period for this region.
The dryness is helping cause huge bushfire threats, and this last weekend was another example. 7000 hectares burnt, threatening Northern suburbs. Perth pretty much stretches upto Yanchep now, incredible growth. This booming city can be seen by the price of a pint, I paid $15 in a city bar recently, about 9 of your English pounds. So expensive to live here, but I have not been to a city more beautiful.

In heaven here tonight. Multiple small cells producing frequent Lightning around the metro area! Mostly to the South. It's midnight, still 27c, hardly a breath of wind and very humid. Very little rain being produced by these storms, which is quite typical. Yesterday we hit 40c and today 37c, no sign of a let up to the heat with the trough hanging around the West coast for the next week. So more thunderstorm potential, very rare for a trough to be so stationary for such a long period of time. Huge bolt just now a few kms south of here, and a building shaker roll of thunder. Lack of rainfall is a concern for bushfires tonight.

Phew sounds like a hotter January then any I experienced when I lived there from 1987 to 1990.

What's the average daytime max at the moment for this January there.

A hot January there is regarded as one with a Max mean of 35c or over.

G'day folks. January turned out to be the 6th hottest on record with an average maximum of just over 33c. The hottest day being the 44c day recorded. February so far has been a month more notable for humidity, I don't think it's going to smash any temperature records. Though overnight minima could be very high. It's seems a struggle to get below 20c this month.
What February 2015 will be notable for is the huge bushfires that have ravaged the forests of the lower Southwest of this state. One of which had a perimeter of over 300km and burnt around a million hectares. A truly enormous fire which fir several days covered Perth in thick smoke haze.
At the moment we have a severe tropical cyclone hitting the mid Queensland coast. Which could hit as a category 4 or 5. It has a very small intense wind field, but if it hits a town directly there will be catastrophic damage. Brisbane is in line for a huge fall of rain over the next couple of days associated with this system. Around 150-300mm today and another 100-150mm tomorrow. Australia's second world cup cricket game may not go ahead at the GABBA. Just a feeling.

Hi folks. Well, some potentially dramatic weather coming to Perth in the next couple of days. We are expecting a cyclone which is to hit the Pilbara coast in the far North-west over the next few hours to head South. It may retain its cyclone status by the time it reaches Perth On Saturday morning. This could result in destructive winds and flash flooding. A spectacular way to end the Summer. It's along time since a cyclone hit the city, and with still nearly 2 days before this is meant to happen there is a still a degree of uncertainty. However, we are already under a severe weather warning, more updates to come.

It missed Perth and ran about 100km off the coast. What it did do was turn the winds into a hot northerly. This was in March as I recall - we had 43C two days later and then some amazing humidity from Indonesia. It was amazing to experience this as I was, and still am interested in meteorology.

I think the last direct hit Perth had was in 1978.
