A developing low sinking southwards across the UK, an intense high in the Greenland/Iceland region allowed a very cold airmass to flood the UK. This brought snowfalls but also very severe frosts.

It must have been a short, sharp cold snap as the CET for that month was 3.6°C, not particularly cold, well by the standards of the day at least. Interestingly March that year was colder at 2.7°C, the same as in 2013!
