But Aberdeen having 135+% of average hours of sunshine hasn't totally silenced richardabdn!

Yes, thanks to the westerly dominance of the winter and the lee effect of the mountains it has been a drier and signifcNtly sunnier than average winter here. On the down side it meant precious little snow.

The westerly, drier than average conditions look like continuing for a little while at least and to be honest I am quite happy with that picture.

Could have fooled me. Winter 2013-2014 was far sunnier in my neck of the woods than this winter.

The winter months (DJF) produce a lot less sunlight (unsurprisingly due to short day length and lower average air pressure) than other seasons.

The improvements in air quality over the past 60 years will account for a few more hours compared to, say 1929.   As the average of sunshine hours is quite low for the winter widely across the UK, in the annual scheme of things a sunny winter makes a small difference to annual totals.  It is a sunny spring and summer that will make the difference.

Here's hoping to 2015!

Up here the two winters were like chalk and cheese in terms of sunshine levels. Here's to more of the way 2015 started in terms of sunshine. Some high teens temperatures would top things off nicely for the coming weekend.
