AFC Snow

It is snowing here in Aberdeen City currently after a period of graupel giving a sprinkling of white on many surfaces. As I type this the snow is getting a bit heavier.

Haha, But it really does feel cold and clammy to the touch at this end (now dead on 10.0 C), I've been chilling - as so to speak- indoors in my dressing gown all day but I and my elderly mother just could not get warm due to the total lack of solar heating, so I caved in and started fettling with the thermostat again.
Hopefully I'll have better luck with the sun coming out tomorrow, though.

I think there is almost as much snow in my garden now as there has been at any stage in the last two winters and it looks like the snow will continue for a little while yet.

(And yes after a few weeks the heat is on again for a bit)

As wintry a day as any this late in the spring. Covering has built up and temperature dropped to +0.4C at 7pm - the lowest of the month. Just a cm or so but anything at this time of year is noteworthy. Only in May 1997 I can remember snow lying later than this.

Anyway we need to look at the possibility of some very low minima in that part of the world with clear skies and the snow cover.

Well this is turning out to be one of the most impressive 'potential record' threads I have ever posted.

-7.7C in Katesbridge.

The May record is -6.5C for Northern Ireland so we were 4 days away from obliterating that one.

Jesus though we nearly had the April one too which was only -8.5C.

Without doubt that is a daily and weekly record though.

Rather surprised that I actually got an air frost in my garden this morning - it briefly dropped to -0.1c

Yesterdays official 14.8c at Pershore was still above the April ave though - not bad for a "cold spell" and expecting similar today with lots more sunshine

Had a max of 12.9c yesterday, but it felt nice in the sunshine if you were sheltered from the N'ly wind.

I'd take this weather in April every time!!

Sharp hail shower yesterday about 4pm, with two lightening/thunder claps, left a white covering. Still some left in shelter as I type this, with bright sunshine, so it shows how cold the air is. -2.1'c last night and were not in a frost prone position. Brrr

This thread really should have been called the Chilly+Scottish snow risk+rural frost risk

Anyway I've already seen 13.4C today but it's currently dipped a little thanks to cloud, that said I wouldn't be surprised if a few locations in the current "cold" spell get close to 15C today.

Some very dry air knocking around.. it's 10C here with a dew point of -8C, yielding RH of 29%. Down to -12C in places.

We also fell to -2C overnight, but that's not too unusual.

It will be interesting to see how that area of precipitation interacts with those freezing dew-points. I suspect the radar can be binned today as alot of precipitation will not be reaching the ground. And even with relatively strong winds there must be pretty dam good potential for some evap cooling with those bitter dewpoints. I suspect the snow potential is somewhat underdone.

I get the distinct impression with these well below temperatures, especially here in London, we are in for a very long period of below average daytime temperatures, maybe lasting well through May, with no proper sustained sign of a warm up . With several exceptions, the temperatures here in the SE have been below average for months now. Maybe this is a portent for a much cooler than average summer? Gavin Partridge implies a potentially cooler summer for 2015...
